Included are a reflection on system theory, theological and psychological reflections and biblical analysis that challenges traditional beliefs about marriage and divorce. Questionnaires were used successfully to elicit the marital experiences of people in the writer's pastoral charge. Narrative and cognitive behavior therapies are set forth as approaches that can help to heal the wounded in congregations. It was concluded that theologies (whether Seventh-Day Adventist or Roman Catholic), married respondents' experiences and opinions, and Bowen Theory concepts all point to premarital counseling as an important forum in which engaged couples can prepare for their married life
