Mentoring is highlighted as an alternative method for African Americans to meet field education requirements. Afrocentricity is an ideological foundation for the ministerial preparation of African American seminarians. The Afrocentric Mentoring Program demonstrates a culturally harmonious model of theological field education for African American students. It considers specific ways by which congregations can better serve the needs and use the experience of the elderly in their administration, pastoral services, educational programs, and community ministries.  The project examines the responsibility of divinity schools to integrate aging concerns into the theological educational and professional training of ministers and other church leaders and proposes an aging center as one model for the divinity school to consider. The purpose of the project was to explore the practicum to determine its significance for the spiritual formation of seminarians, and to learn something about developing leadership for such a practicum.  The plan was to design a practicum in such a way as to allow the participants to discover God in their lives; to be in touch with and express their own spirituality.
