The underpinnings of this thesis are demonstrated through an examination of the Roman Catholic understanding of the Bible, tradition, current magisterial statements and broader theological reflection and experience in relation to homosexuality. The role of conscience and dissent in the history of the Catholic Church are discussed as central dynamics in coming to a stance of self-affirmation. It is argued from the perspective of conscience/dissent that self-affirmation as gay Catholic Christians is a theologically valid (if minority) position. Clinically, within a context of gay-affirmative psychotherapy it is demonstrated that an application of conscience/dissent to the magisterial teaching of the Church can be a fruitful way of helping a gay Catholic client individuate and achieve greater freedom to live deeply both humanly and spiritually."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133909712371712,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:46.937Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:50:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:25:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"994955f4-0dbb-4792-a791-c0abddb16b62","accessControl_ssim":["08226af4-7b5c-45a9-9e21-c79544a74337"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Living beyond the tears: grief and the recovering alcoholic"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:50:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:37:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5427d77a-3b4b-409e-a818-8d5bd88213e2"],"hasLease_ssim":["4eda4c86-3771-4b49-bdb3-7c3ad134d0a6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["J Earl Thompson"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patricia A Kogut"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Grief","Alcohol","Alcoholism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The study explores the interaction between alcoholism and the grief process for the alcoholic in recovery. While America has prided itself on its democratic ideal and its churches have sought to solve social justice problems, racial injustice continues to frustrate unity and trust among the races. Through education, cross-racial appointments, interracial dialogues, marches and rallies, the church has voiced its intolerance of racial injustice. The purpose of this paper is to provide another way clergy and the church may address the race problem. This new way presupposes a correlation between the Christian faith (the philosophy of nonviolence expounded by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr) and analytical psychology (Carl G Jung's concepts of the 'shadow' and to a lesser degree the 'self'). To a lesser degree the paper suggests, with Dr King as a prime example, that the degree to which one is able to realize the 'self' has a positive impact on one's public and private life, and the spirit of America as a whole. This paper concludes with some clues to enhance the growth of the ministering person and the effectiveness of one's ministry with respect to racial equality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134169990955008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:55.158Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:50:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:21:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6e946679-3cb5-4503-87f5-08aa2776c8c9","accessControl_ssim":["815722bb-2109-438d-932b-0ae5c954ea44"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Psycho-religious therapeutic assessment of mid-life adults in a protestant church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:50:48Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:22:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ace9ae62-c557-4796-9871-1bc944a8a75f"],"hasLease_ssim":["bf17a9f6-6632-40f0-83c8-76a73fa947cb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["A Rand Peabody"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Church work","Middle-aged persons"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This case study exploration of a technique employed within the professional context of parish ministry to enhance individuation of mid-life adults contains supporting psychological, theological, life-stage, and hermeneutical material. It concludes that understanding the structure of traditional rites of passage can help to guide a male pastoral psychotherapist when working with male clients, and that identity as a pastor enhances his effectiveness with them."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133403055128576,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:43.751Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:50:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:24:21Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8c424e2c-040c-4fa9-bbce-5e5d2d721e25","accessControl_ssim":["5dae341d-3b31-41e9-ada8-8ddce31d3049"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Interpersonal skills training for ministry: testing a program"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:50:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:14:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d3fc3683-ba7c-4faa-aea2-f4083d5116bc"],"hasLease_ssim":["bbef04d3-c967-46f0-ac67-b43dd3fa4bdd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["J Earl Thompson"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kevin Egan"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Interpersonal relations","Self-esteem","Seminarians--Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study attempts to test the effectiveness of an interpersonal skills-training program on candidates preparing for ministry. It reports on evaluations made by students who participated in the program and on a correlational study carried out on the relationship between interpersonal skills training and change in the self-concept of students. The design was based on a two-group pretest/posttest follow-up model using the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. A statistical analysis of all TCS subscale and total scores disclosed no systematic effect of the intervention on self-concept.
