The hypothesis is that religious belief provides a healing and defensive influence in psychological change. The goal of the project is to help therapists better understand religious belief in its particular psychological context. By using three typologies with a case study method, the author finds that belief and affiliation serve intrapsychic functions unique to individual personality. When equipped with this understanding, the therapist is able to make better alliances and interpretations. It is the first stage of the psychotherapeutic process, and can help to locate the specific nature of a person's guilt, remorse, depression, and sadness. Confession, along with a call upon some power greater than one's self, plays a vital part in the recovery process of the alcoholic. It is a central thrust of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The pastoral counselor is a therapist but also a pastor, a representative of God. The element of confession becomes sharper in pastoral counseling because of the pastor's dual role. Through the use of the theories of C G Jung, this project suggests that the complex constellated around the deceased becomes an important component of the bereft's individuation. Because this complex is deeply shaken at the death, the ego can no longer access the libido that was provided by the complex and the self's individuation process is stopped. Dreams and-or visions are the archetypal nucleus of the complex renewed in a symbol. There are similarities between these grief experiences, near-death experiences and the resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ. It uses case studies to demonstrate the role-specific pitfalls which pastors experience that contrast with their inherent therapeutic potential. It presents the major perspectives of family systems theory with appropriate procedures, techniques and case reports. The author concludes that an integrated theoretical and procedural structure for counseling, which includes pastoral theology and family systems theory, can enable pastors to maximize their inherent therapeutic potential and minimize the likelihood of becoming 'wounded helpers'."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133865703636992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:04.967Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:31:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dcae73c0-b971-40d9-adb9-98e42242e224","accessControl_ssim":["e5216779-3ca6-4233-a1f0-1d6373c287d4"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The psychology of confession and the Greek Orthodox Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:31:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:26:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a78e7ecd-333f-4421-bc94-a14892a5fbdb"],"hasLease_ssim":["04e7d6e1-0228-4d12-84b1-9559b6108d78"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nicholas V Gamvas"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Orthodox Eastern Church","Confession--Orthodox Eastern Church","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores the psychology of confession within the context of the traditions and practices of the Greek Orthodox Church. The study addresses the practice and psychology of confession. Research is coupled with the author's personal insights as an active churchman with obsessional tendencies.
