Lesbian, gay, and bisexual persons have been placed into the role of the bearer of sexual shame and have been the object of projection, discrimination, and prejudice. Through the use of structural family therapy, combined with concepts from various family systems theories and object relations theory, homophobia in the church is analyzed. This analysis leads to a theology and psychology of liberation, empowering lesbian/gay/bisexual and heterosexual persons to change the structures of homophobia into structures of liberation. Through 15 in-depth interviews this project relates the experiences of persons in a liberation worshipping community in New Hampshire. A survey questionnaire was used to assess the churches' and ministers' involvement in the pastoral care of adoptive individuals and families. Survey results indicated that the ministers' and churches' involvement is limited and adoptive families have a need for pastoral support. Consequently, as a model of pastoral care, the author recommends that ministers and churches incorporate an 'adoption ceremony' to embrace, celebrate and witness the family's adoptive identity. Secondly, that the church establish an adoption support group or network with other churches and community adoption support services and groups for pastoral care."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133914110099456,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:26:51.131Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:31:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:25:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9b51afee-7333-4efa-97f4-7b31173768c5","accessControl_ssim":["0aab360d-ae8b-4836-911d-afc3fa0d363e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Play and the transformative journey: a study in the individuation of the playself"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:31:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:40:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["abc95235-c665-4993-beb0-cf76da6278ab"],"hasLease_ssim":["237af40c-dcbc-4416-8b63-1123730955f1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["William Ventimiglia"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Anne W Strand"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Play"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Mature play, a deeply spiritual act of faith which occurs within the liminial space between fantasy and reality and springs from the unconflicted flowing synthesis of two inherent urges, sensation and organization, is explored through the perspectives of Freud, Jung, Winnicott, Neal, Progoff, Gendlin and Meister Eckhart. It is based on interviews of six women and two men, aged 30 to 50, who are survivors of childhood abuse. This study indicates that beliefs which are most conducive to recovery are those that affirm the survivor's own goodness and power. In terms of God image, the most significant shift was from an external God-person to an internal God-experience. Several religious themes were examined including: suffering, free will, evil and forgiveness. A theoretical structure is described, identifying this grief as a response to men's early developmental experience of lack of a father figure with whom to identify. The author proposes that through a conscious grieving of the loss inherent in this early experience, men may have greater capacity to engage in relationship. The argument is developed through literature review, self-in-relation theory and attachment theory. Excerpts from interviews illustrate the author's thesis and a theological grounding is developed for the analysis and healing.
