Since its establishment in 1921, the Botswana SDA Church has not experienced consistent growth.  By year-end 2000 it had a baptized membership of 20,295, twenty-four national pastors, fifty-seven organized churches, and eighty-six companies.  A statistical analysis for 1990 to 2000 shows a decrease in annual baptisms and a steady increase in drop-outs, missing, and dying members.  In an attempt to find a way in which the two fields could be helped to experience growth, this study looked carefully at two things: (1) Botswana's historical background, and (2) Botswana's growth patterns, as well as reasons for both growth and non-growth.  A questionnaire was administered to 206 members of six selected churches. The results of the field survey were organized into tables giving frequencies and percentages of the responses.  The data were analyzed and conclusions drawn based on the responses.  The final results of the field survey showed that the following issues hinder growth and must be attended to if the two fields are to experience healthy growth: lack of lay involvement, poor spirituality of church members, insufficient numbers of pastors to fill district positions, great losses due to drop-outs and missing members, poor giving of tithes and offerings, lack of consistent church planting, and lack of SDA schools to foster Christian education. Based on the analysis of the field surveys, some church growth strategies are suggested to enable the church to address factors hindering growth: (1) Conduct church growth awareness seminars, (2) emphasize personal spiritual formation, lay training, and assimilation strategies, and (3) stress church planting movements, and Christian education. A self-evaluation strategy was used to focus on the purpose of the church.  The congregation assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the church, and the church board studied its purpose. Departmental leaders prepared action plans based on a revised mission statement and thirteen new goals, and made periodic progress reports. The church was not growing because it had become institutionalized. The basic concern of this project was to determine how the strategy might be implemented in the Eugene Seventh-day Adventist Church.  A theological investigation and an examination of contemporary concepts of caring in management literature form a basis for the study.  Two surveys establish the felt needs of the community and its awareness and attitude toward Seventh-day Adventists.  A third survey documents the attitudes and behavior of church members which enhance or inhibit church growth.  A narrative describes the planning and administration of a one-year program for caring church ministry in the Eugene, Oregon, Seventh-day Adventist church.  During the year's program the number of new members added to the congregation was minimal. In the last chapter, both church growth enhancing and church growth inhibiting characteristics of the Eugene church are identified.  Heritage and contemporary goals of members must be respected for a church growth climate to exist. The pastors of ten churches, chiefly Anglo, 300-400 in attendance, and not in an institutional setting were surveyed. Ten churches with less than 220 in attendance were also surveyed. These were compared looking for features that would make a difference.  The crucial differences between the two groups were in the areas of pastoral leadership, clarity of vision, staffing for growth,  relational evangelism, contemporary worship styles, and vital small groups.  These findings were applied to the Northwest Houston Seventh-day Adventist Church.  The results were that it grew through the 200 barrier. If an Adventist church wishes to move through the 200 barrier, it must become a different kind of organization. Prayerful pastoral leadership is vital. Clear visison is critical. It must staff itself for growth. Evangelism should be more relational. Worship styles will tend to be more contemporary.
