The author identifies disturbing news in human struggles that are rooted in abuses of power that result in discrimination and neglect. She discusses the development of mass media and the influence of politics and economics on news production. Learning to adapt, to adjust, and striving to achieve and to survive, in America, they are American citizens but no 'Americans.' In Vietnam, they are Vietnamese but not Vietnam's citizens. This exilic experience of Vietnamese American Catholics needs to be addressed in preaching. The Hebrews' exilic experience is helpful for Vietnamese Americans to voice their felt loss. Such preaching involves a measure of self-disclosure, providing identification between preacher and hearer. The author did qualitative research with men and women in recovery who were participating in Serenity Retreats, and who affirmed the need for a preacher's self-disclosure and awareness of recovery motifs. He also did similar research within a parish setting, with like results. The second chapter describes basic rhetorical principles, specifically found in Augustine's De Doctrina Christiana, showing how the character of the preacher makes preaching credible.  The third chapter proposes three conversations that take place in the preaching act:  the preparatory conversation, the homiletic conversation, and the reflective conversation.  The fourth chapter describes the program that I developed in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for the preparation of deacons who preach. The Church passes on the Christian faith to its young, but it also receives new and valuable perspectives into its faith from the young. This paper seeks to explore systematically children's insights into the Christian message, drawing on the body of research and reflection accumulated by the international Catechesis of the Good Shepherd movement over the course of the past fifty years. It then asks how children's theology--named 'mustard seed theology'--can be of particular use to preachers. It reports the results of two sets of interactions with preachers around the question. This process of unlearning (conversion) is life long.  Small rural communities, typically more resistant to change, are not immune to the sin of racism or the need for ongoing conversion.  Conversion begins with an awareness of racism brought to light through the prophetic preaching of the Word of God.  This conversion process is likened to the recovery process from an addiction.
