The results indicated that there was such a relationship.  In other words, more spiritual maturity meant a more positive coping with the challenges of aging.  Spiritual maturity was determined by measuring a set of spiritual attitudes and spiritual practices. Teaching of God's word, experiential activities, and inner healing prayer encounters had a substantial impact upon the spiritual well-being of the participants.  These results showed a positive effect upon the participants' false beliefs and emotional wounds. Each lesson includes as historical description of slavery and an explanation of a spiritual. The curriculum focuses on the public and coded, secret meanings in spirituals. Bible references as source inspiration are provided with each spiritual. A professional panel of twenty-one educators evaluated the curriculum. They found it was an objective presentation of the history of slavery and the spirituals. Two questionnaires were employed and the results indicated a fairly high degree of belief in a uniquely Quaker paradigm of pastoral ministry. A survey was distributed to the clergy of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to assess their experience of the dark night of the soul. Interior influences like struggles with sexual issues, low self-esteem, and moral conflicts contributed to a greater experience of the dark night of the soul. Thirty-four participants from Greater Gethsemane Missionary baptist Church responded to a qualitative and quantitative questionnaire measuring aspects of self-image. The results revealed that absent/distant fathering influenced their self-care and self-giving. A survey was developed and distributed among thirty participants across five different ELCA congregations in order to develop data. The data gathered indicated that approximately half of the participants lacked a developed understanding of the work of evil and the Devil in their faith lives, including a biblical understanding. Participants completed a full one-day retreat which included lectures, participative exercises, spiritual disciplines such as formational prayer, and Lectio Divina. Pre and post tests were given to measure the results. The results of the data revealed increased movement in the participants' self-esteem. Further positive measurement evidenced a desire for Christian fellowship and a deeper relationship with God.
