This project articulates a Reformed theology and then examines worship from that theological perspective, exploring the content of worship, the shape of worship, and the conduct of worship.  The presider's role is of crucial importance.  Presiding poorly can impede the congregation's encounter with God. It wrestles with communication challenges presented by semantic confusion resulting from use in both faith traditions of a common faith vocabulary with substantially different meanings. Principles of cultural anthropology are used to formulate a communication strategy. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience.  This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience.  Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition.  Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth.  The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship.  Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4.
