postmodern context must move away from modernist methodology, epistemology and theology. The author examines the major cultural and philosophical themes of postmodernism through the lens of popular music. Two common evangelical responses to postmodernism are appraised. A defense of evangelism is offered, based on Christian realism and the ontologically unique claims of Christ. Lesslie Newbigin's model of contextually-appropriate mission, as the encounter between Gospel, culture and church, is commended as an alternative to non-foundational pluralism. The author concludes with ten guidelines for relational, community-based narrative evangelism."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135117566017536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:45:58.836Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:02:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:45:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1eb9d1bf-b1df-45c5-beda-8fcd704a01df","accessControl_ssim":["b2a75307-f538-43a5-8eb2-f3ab1eded0a5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Teach it again: using multiple intelligences in adult Christian education"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:02:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7e76b92c-9f65-45c1-940c-666c44dd20c3"],"hasLease_ssim":["4192a5e7-1f63-435d-be8b-afe0b372bb1e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Laura B Lewis"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William C Hassel"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Multiple intelligences","Christian education--Teaching methods","Christian education of adults","Gardner, Howard"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The foundation of this work is to use Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence as the basic teaching strategy in teaching adult Christian education. The primary teacher/catechesis is the liturgy of the Church. In the ancient church the process had four steps or stages: evangelization/inquiry or the precatechumenate, the catechumenate or catechesis, purification or enlightenment marked by the rites of Christian initiation, and finally mystagogy. This ancient four step process disappears sometime around the fifth century. The Roman Catholic Church's Second Vatican Council called for a recovery of the catechumenate which led to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The RCIA is a set of rites which structure the four steps of the catechumenal process. This project is a survey of the past forty years of catechumenal practice and the implications for Presbyterians. This project is divided into four chapters which address: The recovery of the ancient practice in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and an analysis of the rites, the renewal of catechumenal practice and experimentation in the Episcopal Church in America, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA), the theology of 'unified rites' in the Presbyterian Church particularly focusing on confirmation and admission to the Lord's Table, and strategizing about the renewal of baptism as preparation for catechumenal practice in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and raising implications of such practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135176738209792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:55.267Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:53:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:46:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"529ba8c0-c9d3-45c3-b3fd-6c17c8e9c9f9","accessControl_ssim":["3991af13-52f1-4e89-a949-1eba94a07c23"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipped to share: a curriculum for workplace evangelism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:53:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:33:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["057eff0a-4bf1-4375-9d68-808909b8465b"],"hasLease_ssim":["9ab79311-61a0-40e6-91c9-af9be31f5162"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J Andrew Dearman"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul W Riddle"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Witness bearing (Christianity)","Professional ethics","Evangelistic work","Work environment"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is an effort to equip Christians to bear witness to Christ in their workplaces in responsible and appropriate ways. The changes include movement away from an agriculturally based rural community, changes in local businesses, and shifts in land use. The impact includes shifts in church programs and demographics. Postmodern philosophers of language have elucidated the idea that the reader or listener hold many of the keys to authority rather than the author or speaker as was previously espoused. Thus, this project seeks to explore the important role that context plays upon the way preachers go about attending to their task of communicating in the postmodern era. The project explores Fred Craddock's thesis regarding the inductive method of preaching and its continued viability. The project also examines the sociological issues impacting the preacher who would speak a word into the postmodern situation. The author utilizes the framework of David Tracy's theological revisionism to develop how the preacher might approach the world with the gospel message in an intellectually honest manner amidst a world filled with ambiguity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135121388077056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:02.481Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:38:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:46:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4051940f-9b21-4881-b4fd-525bcd15e407","accessControl_ssim":["6e143ea4-ffe1-4c09-8b26-99849b64adb5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'A new company, a new covenant': covenant small groups for pastors"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:38:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:00:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d1ee8a51-e59a-47eb-b8f6-3d83a96c054e"],"hasLease_ssim":["86306545-7b63-40fd-a5b8-7e0875fb27a5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David Ruesink","Michael Jinkins"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["H Christine O'Reilly"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Rural churches","Covenant theology","Church polity","Small groups"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The challenges of ministry in rural congregations are many. Support and growth for rural pastors is crucial if they are to offer effective ministry in this context. One answer to this concern is the formation of covenant small groups that meet regularly for worship, Bible study, self/group directed continuing education, mutual support and prayer. Research into the biblical, theological, and historical foundations of collegial ministry, current pastoral theological writing and covenant small groups is presented. The stories of three 'covenant groups' are presented, including examples of covenants and the insights of group members.
