The objective of this project is to identify and develop opportunities for teaching stewardship principles within the worship experiences of celebrative days in the church's worship.  A theology of stewardship and a chapter on the nature of purpose of worship provide the context for the development of special days. I used the approach of Lutheran theologian George Lindbeck to develop an alternative way to think about Christian communities and to develop a process for reforming a Lutheran identity through what he calls a cultural-linguistic model.  This approach, which I chose to reform the identity of Holy Cross Lutheran Church (Austin, Texas), places emphasis on learning the language of faith through the process of community catechesis.  A key part of the process for discerning the present identity of the Holy Cross community was preaching a series of seven sermons based on themes found in Paul Hanson's The People Called. This set the context for a series of community forums, in which I used some of Clifford Geertz's insights in cultural observation to develop a survey of the Holy Cross community and the city of Austin."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135376634544128,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:05.902Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:29:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:49:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9ba8709d-c38c-44e5-8e6f-c1bd5cedbd2f","accessControl_ssim":["5611817a-fd88-40e6-be92-c4510f2eedd6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Defining and communicating an understanding of Christian vocation as informed by the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:29:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:41:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4933b108-afe8-492c-a5f8-a70faf9c5b08"],"hasLease_ssim":["aa9110f4-d0e7-41d9-894d-9a41d79ab1ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John E Alsup","William Stacy Johnson"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charles R Traylor"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bonhoeffer, Dietrich, 1906-1945","Vocation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to present a definition of Christian vocation which focuses on faith-sharing as a primary means of communicating the Christian gospel. Cross racial/cultural ministry offers the United Methodist Church through its theological tradition of an inclusive ministry (John Wesley's catholic spirit) and appointment-making process (church assignments) a unique opportunity to be faithful to the gospel of Christ Jesus, where 'there is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free; there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus' (Galatians 3:28)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135208481751040,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:47:25.540Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:28:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:47:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7259b6e9-7410-4bdf-a265-e7dd711912c4","accessControl_ssim":["17189ffc-2994-4597-895c-f39547ec7846"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Embodying the Gospel in creative narrative"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:28:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:28:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["780c6b8f-f64a-4ecb-9c02-4cad2345e71c"],"hasLease_ssim":["39e020c7-30d9-41d8-855d-7711bfc4a5d6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert M Shelton","Prescott H Williams"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William A McWeeny"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Narrative theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Short stories, those which can be told conveniently or read in one sitting, have the potential to encapsulate and communicate faith and values compactly and efficiently. Narrative of this sort is used in the Bible, e.g. the parables of Jesus or the books of Ruth and Esther.  In this project I explore story as a vehicle for communicating the gospel.  First, I examined exegetically six texts.  Second, I made a brief historical survey of hermeneutics and set forth my own tentative statements toward a hermeneutic of story.  Third, I created a series of six stories based on the texts previously studied and making use of the hermeneutic I described.  Fourth I reflected on the stories, on the responses made when they were first told, on the stories of persons and the Christian community, and on the role of my own personal story as a Christian."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135240828223488,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:47:56.388Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:28:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"73039fe2-13f8-4ad6-a7bd-00234a5a7063","accessControl_ssim":["aa93404d-31d4-4a61-8c7c-131d5f6f73d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A comparative analysis of the ministry in campus and parish: the effects of social context and identity"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:28:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:29:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9c1f9512-1cd6-4dab-8b81-1d16d97ba840"],"hasLease_ssim":["8085e5fa-8b11-4a1b-a11b-8f6ee3f00444"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine Eaton Blair","Firnhaber"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert L Budewig"],"keyword_tesim":["Campus ministry"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project is a resource to better understand the similarities and differences between parish and campus ministries, and how the similarities and differences affect the programs, ministry styles, and forms of worship in each ministry setting. I then analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and came to a decision regarding limits in cultural adaptation in worship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135410117672960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:37.835Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:28:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:49:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a81790f6-4a38-4650-910f-da76559b4e95","accessControl_ssim":["79216513-be9d-4b2a-8633-b256970621f1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Congregations responding to transitional neighborhoods"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:28:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:00:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["84ff7a0b-86eb-40bd-abcf-c010af325672"],"hasLease_ssim":["ffa0c645-b827-4a38-b5d7-f1580a3f1c6b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Hendrick L Lewis"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Harvey Bongers"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This DMin project investigates changes experienced by congregations when ratios between Anglo and Hispanic communities shift, and examines the homogeneous and heterogeneous approaches to ministry and the theology used to support each paradigm. There are several reasons why a pastor might embark upon such an endeavor.  The fastest growing ethnic population in the Southwest is Hispanic.  Large numbers of middle class Hispanics are, for all practical purposes, unchurched. These are but two of them and they are compelling.  The paper explores four areas of Anglo-Hispanic relations relative to the mainline Protestant church: Anglo-Hispanic relations in the American Southwest; how some congregations have been able to make themselves attractive to Hispanics so the Hispanics would take membership in their congregations; a 'how to' pamphlet telling interested pastors what steps to take to integrate their congregations; and, reflections on the theological implications of such evangelism. The theological reflections are the author's own and are offered as a beginning exploration of the subject and not a resolution of the issues raised."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135417143132160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:44.535Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":113,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Alan P Trafford","hits":1,"label":"Alan P Trafford"},{"value":"Alan Wicks","hits":1,"label":"Alan Wicks"},{"value":"Alfred Eugene Staggs","hits":1,"label":"Alfred Eugene Staggs"},{"value":"Austin Frederick","hits":1,"label":"Austin Frederick"},{"value":"Bernard M Rochon","hits":1,"label":"Bernard M Rochon"},{"value":"Buddy Sipe","hits":1,"label":"Buddy Sipe"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Reformed","hits":3,"label":"Theology, Reformed"},{"value":"Evangelistic work--Theory","hits":2,"label":"Evangelistic work--Theory"},{"value":"Campus ministry","hits":1,"label":"Campus ministry"},{"value":"Church and community","hits":1,"label":"Church and community"},{"value":"Congregations--Internal conflict","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Internal conflict"},{"value":"Experiment in worship","hits":1,"label":"Experiment in worship"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology","hits":8,"label":"Theology"},{"value":"Church work","hits":7,"label":"Church work"},{"value":"Liturgics","hits":7,"label":"Liturgics"},{"value":"Pastoral theology","hits":7,"label":"Pastoral theology"},{"value":"Preaching","hits":7,"label":"Preaching"},{"value":"Cultural pluralism","hits":6,"label":"Cultural pluralism"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"United States","hits":3,"label":"United States"},{"value":"Latin Americans","hits":1,"label":"Latin Americans"},{"value":"Mexico","hits":1,"label":"Mexico"},{"value":"North America--Mexican-American Border Region","hits":1,"label":"North America--Mexican-American Border Region"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":113,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary","hits":113,"label":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":113,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1996","hits":21,"label":"1996"},{"value":"1993","hits":15,"label":"1993"},{"value":"1992","hits":13,"label":"1992"},{"value":"1994","hits":11,"label":"1994"},{"value":"1995","hits":10,"label":"1995"},{"value":"1999","hits":9,"label":"1999"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary","hits":113,"label":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":113,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary","hits":113,"label":"Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":113,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":7,"next_page":8,"prev_page":6,"total_pages":12,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":60,"total_count":113,"first_page?":false,"last_page?":false}}}
