A God-moved heart through the gospel results in servant leadership. Christians apply the gospel as a discipline. Servant leadership literature focuses on practices neglecting inner-formation. However, virtue models consider inner disposition/character. An instrumental case study indicated that the gospel influenced how leaders treated and responded to others. However, spiritual development was foundational for only two leaders. Findings included the importance of awareness, gospel clarity, and the need to move from a virtues-based to a faith-based model of servant leadership. Ministry leaders are likely to adopt the leadership style of unorthodox mentors if they have no formal theological education. Leaders nor formally trained are less likely to display transformational leadership behaviors. African American leaders were interviewed about higher education in their ministries. They were tested for a full range of leadership behaviors using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. A formal theological studies education was desired but not required by the leaders interviewed. This mixed methods study revealed that there is a connection between church leadership development efforts and how the workforce views the leadership as servants. Research explored servant leadership, distance leadership, and cross-cultural leadership. Field interviews with more than 80 global leaders suggested that effective global leaders (a) employ servant leadership by humbly serving and developing others into mature, autonomous leaders, (b) overcome relational distance and build trust using advanced communications technology, and (c) grow in self-awareness of cultural bias.
