Accompanying experiences, feelings, and reactions are described and related to the general literature and theory of grief.  Previous research, interviews, and life experiences, affirm that bereaved men have been expected to 'be strong' and to be concerned for others more than themselves. Their styles of griefwork indicate that they prefer to act rather than to talk or express feelings. The study discusses the traditional Chinese family-orientation and its continued influence in the values, attitudes and behavior of the English-educated, urban middle-class Singapore Chinese.  The introduction of Western cultural norms through the process of modernization was readily accepted as a basis for marriage and family life.  However, the continued influence of the traditional family-orientation was to be a significant cause of dysfunctional marriages among these couples. Patients from Florida Hospital Family Health Center completed the Religiosity Coping Index.
