In examining the culture of diocesan priests in the US since 1965, the project finds two dominant identity metaphors--priest-as-mediator and priest-as-minister--and traces their historical roots through a series of 'flash points.' The Whitehead model (Method in Ministry 1995) is used. Chapter one presents a brief history of seminary formation and selected current ecclesial documents. Chapter two focuses on mid-life and faith development theories. Chapter three contains student and alumni survey data. Chapter four brings the components into dialogue.
