The experience of Border Awareness Encounters brings participants from churches and universities into contact with migrants and border organizations, through a praxis of intercultural encounter, mutual solidarity, and border hospitality to migrants based on Pope Francis’ message “to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate migrants and refugees.”\r\nThis thesis-project argues that migrants and refugees are agents of conscientization, evangelization, and transformation, and as such are key to transforming the Church into a more pastoral and prophetic witness to the Gospel.\r\nBased on conversations with migrants and border organizations, and narratives shared by participants in week-long Border Awareness Encounters, this thesis-project will investigate how intercultural encounters help people see migrants and their families in the fullness of their human dignity as agents of conscientization, evangelization, and transformation, and how these intercultural encounters have impacted the participants of border awareness experiences, often leading to direct service, mutual accompaniment, advocacy and public witness on behalf of immigrants in communities, parishes, and dioceses when they return home.\r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/ec8cba85-d2a4-4107-ba3b-db4596e61633?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["cd577b06-7e1a-41e0-b5fc-b17cf70c15e4","ec8cba85-d2a4-4107-ba3b-db4596e61633"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["cd577b06-7e1a-41e0-b5fc-b17cf70c15e4","ec8cba85-d2a4-4107-ba3b-db4596e61633"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["swright2000@gmail.com"],"_version_":1865674638926807040,"timestamp":"2026-05-20T02:59:45.915Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a80b8768-6d87-4804-aaff-4cd84f31512a","accessControl_ssim":["52f54851-a536-4eb3-b431-535bb17fdc3c"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["8c70275f-1308-494d-aefe-cc3620048c2e"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["8c70275f-1308-494d-aefe-cc3620048c2e"],"depositor_ssim":["frankq142@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["frankq142@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Reflecting the Kingdom of God: Interculturality as a Praxis of Ministry for Multicultural Parishes"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-05-05T15:28:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d5cd7a8b-7290-457e-a97e-0c2577799240"],"hasLease_ssim":["14ec6a9c-1553-4fd5-9349-82bd0b1e0f64"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"year_tesim":["2026"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The case study meticulously examined the elements of ethnic coexistence, cultural and linguistic dominance, disparities in ethnic integration into the new community, power imbalances, and parish administrative structures as potential root causes of and perpetuation of ethnic segregation within multicultural Catholic parishes. In response to the challenges posed by a divided parish and the aspiration to transform it into a reflection of the Kingdom of God, as described in the Lumen Gentium, which portrays the church as the beginning of the Kingdom of God, the thesis proposes interculturality grounded on the perichoretic community as a transformative praxis. To be known requires respect and understanding of their communities’ pastoral needs and religious practices. Sadly, many leaders have a colonial mentality that foments stereotypes and even prejudice toward Hispanics. The only way to move beyond this mentality is to sincerely enter into relationships with Latino(a)s, and understand how they see themselves. This respectful understanding must begin with our Church leaders. Latino/as want to share their cultural and religious practices that connect them to their families and ancestors. Although the Hispanic Catholics play a vital role in the life of the Church, barriers to inclusion remain. Hispanic Catholics want to fully participate in the Church’s mission to serve the whole community. They are eager to share their gifts through collaborative service in their parishes.\r\n\r\nIn this thesis project I reveal Hispanic communities that are already present but not often seen. I introduce their religious practices to the larger community including church leaders. I focus on the religious practice called Adoración Nocturna Mexicana (Mexican Nocturnal Adoration). A practice where members of the Mexican Catholic communities spend the night in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar where, like all Catholics, they worship the true presence of Jesus Christ in the consecrated hosts reposited in the Tabernacle and exposed in the monstrance on the altar during nocturnal adoration vigil. The study shows how Hispanics have historically and are presently practicing nocturnal adoration as part of their popular religious practices. More importantly, I explore what drives them toward these religious practices. By listening to their stories, I have heard their heartfelt voices as they express their needs and desires, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. I also demonstrate how they emulate the Samaritan woman at the well (John: 4-42), and like her are moved to evangelization when they also come to the realization of being known and therefore loved by Christ. \r\n\r\nI delve into the pastoral, social, and theological dimensions of Hispanic popular Catholicism and devotional practices, referred to as Santo praxis and lo cotidiano (the everyday). \r\n\r\nThe goal is to demonstrate how popular religious devotion is forged in the historical struggles of people who are oppressed. I describe in detail the rituals promoted by Adoración Nocturna Mexicana. \r\n\r\nAnd finally, share a theological reflection of the study’s findings and a pastoral response related to the importance of intercultural competence for effective leadership and accompaniment of Hispanic communities.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["53c67891-28b0-4cc7-90c6-569a51b7443c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["rmendez@student.ctu.edu"],"_version_":1854424409589153792,"timestamp":"2026-01-15T22:42:11.142Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-06T23:42:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-06T23:42:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9d28a19f-56fc-44af-bb47-613062b3ca9e","accessControl_ssim":["6ff976a7-547a-4903-bf36-2bb3da2f93a1"],"depositor_ssim":["plesefuneral@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["plesefuneral@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["“Blessed Are They Who Mourn”: Toward the Re-envisioning of Funeral Direction as Pastoral Ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-06T23:42:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-06T23:42:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6b362ec2-40ce-497a-a503-327097fe75b7"],"hasLease_ssim":["5535db39-997d-4e5e-b089-a2fa22f3fa57"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Despite the deeply emotional and spiritual nature of funeral service, many practitioners do not explicitly connect their faith commitment with their professional practice. This research argues that structured ministerial formation can enhance personal fulfillment and improve the ability of Christian funeral directors to serve grieving families with greater compassion and effectiveness.\r\n\r\nThrough qualitative research with a select group of funeral directors and an analysis of literature on faith-based grief counseling and accompaniment, the study explores the intersection of faith and funeral service. The primary audience includes Christian funeral directors in a specific region of the United States seeking a faith-integrated vocational approach. Secondary audiences consist of educators and leaders in the funeral industry, such as accrediting bodies and professional organizations, who may consider incorporating faith-based ministerial formation into professional training. Additionally, the findings may hold relevance for funeral professionals from other faith traditions.\r\nThe thesis pursues three key outcomes: (1) a critical examination of the relationship between funeral direction and faith within professional education programs, (2) an analysis of the perspectives and aspirations of Christian funeral directors integrating faith with vocation, and (3) a preliminary vision for a structured ministerial praxis that positions funeral service as a transformational ministry rather than merely a transactional profession.\r\n\r\nThis study acknowledges certain limitations, including the relatively small sample size and demographic constraints reflecting the predominantly white, male funeral industry in suburban Chicago. However, it incorporates insights from female and racially diverse funeral directors to provide a more representative perspective. While striving for diversity, equity, and inclusion, the findings are not presented as universally applicable beyond the study’s participants. Additionally, while the research does not introduce a tested vocational integration workshop, it lays the groundwork for future development.\r\n\r\nBeyond its direct ministerial implications, this research offers broader applications, encouraging professional funeral associations to consider faith-informed training programs. It also invites faith communities to recognize funeral service as a ministry, offering affirmation and ongoing support to practitioners. Although focused on Christian funeral directors, the study anticipates that its insights may resonate with professionals from other religious traditions, ultimately fostering a more holistic and spiritually grounded approach to funeral service.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["plesefuneral@gmail.com"],"_version_":1831416556034195456,"timestamp":"2025-05-06T23:42:12.131Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-04-28T21:19:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-28T21:19:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"94e7c4ea-4848-421e-b0a1-8cc89682b0bb","accessControl_ssim":["5249854d-8fb1-4f19-854c-340551ca5410"],"depositor_ssim":["tsegal@student.ctu.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["tsegal@student.ctu.edu"],"title_tesim":["Blurring the Creation Binary: An Intersectional Approach to Ecotheologically-Centered Narrative as a Ministerial Praxis"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-04-28T21:19:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-04-28T21:19:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["380a820b-8fc3-48b2-8cf9-7ad47a8dd305"],"hasLease_ssim":["812e16b4-9c68-4f16-8157-9e199c93760d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A survey was shared with the schools in the Archdiocese asking teachers, administrators, and staff members to reflect on their experiences of mission integration and formation.
