This study looks at the effects upon men of the absence of fathers and mentoring men, men's dependency upon women to meet emotional needs and men's difficulties in separating developmentally from mothers. The work of Robert Bly, the masculine archetypes of Robert Moore and the spirituality/sexuality of James Nelson are addressed. Two stories enjoying currency for their illustrating landmarks to mature masculinity are included. Case studies are from the author's pastoral psychotherapeutic practice. Assuming that some uses are better than others, the project seeks indices for evaluating materials, personnel and programs related to the lectionary. A form of factor analysis is judged the most appropriate method for discovering the indices. An interpretive perspective is illuminated by a contrast between two distinct theological currents within contemporary Catholicism. The lectionary is situated within one current, as are its appropriate religious education uses. Data gathered in sixty-one interviews are reported and interpreted.
