It begins with an empirical analysis of moral issue articles within two Seventh-day Adventist journals, Ministry Magazine and Message Magazine, over the period from fall 2001 through December 2005.  Next, a conceptual analysis is undertaken of the theological model that informs moral judgments within these journals.  The conclusions of the analysis are that the model of moral theology is legalistic in its commitment to an inflexible and literalistic biblicism.  In addition to critiquing the model for moral theology within these journals, the model of moral theology offered by Immanuel Kant is reviewed and found to be inadequate for providing a viable alternative. This is because it too is legalistic in its commitment to an inflexible rationalism.  What is offered as a viable alternative for a robust Adventist moral theology is one that takes seriously the Adventist heritage by organically binding moral imperatives to prima facie biblical principles that emerge from major biblical motifs.  Moreover, this model incorporates the Adventist prophetic witness to oppressive contexts. Samoans a century ago were given the impression that their cultural values and traditions were somewhat primitive and unfit for the Christian faith.  They were told that it was a culture of pagans and heathens, and it did not have a place in the community of faith. Samoan people are proud of their heritage and take pride in their culture, but are somehow confused when they attempt to relate their culture to their faith and other different cultures.  The negative impression and attitude from the western culture, as well as their own people, makes their cultural traditions weak and less than perfect in relation to the rest of the world. This adverse attitude is prevalent in some areas of Samoa as well as the Samoan community in the United States, where the influence of western culture is predominant.  Truly, when two or more cultures interact, the balance of the scale tends to swing to the values of the stronger and dominant culture.  The inferior culture will adopt the values of the predominant culture.  This is the situation with the Samoan Christians in Samoa, as well as those who are living in the United States.  This issue has been with the Samoan Christians from the time when the first Christian missionaries landed on the shores of the Samoan islands. This situation has not confined its unfortunate impact to Samoan culture alone, but has affected other cultures as well.  The author believes that there is no wrongdoing in adopting values from another culture. However, there is a real problem and danger when cultural values and heritage are lost.  Then persons are unable to contribute to society and to find meaning as part of a community of faith.  Hence, this project attempts to relate some of the Samoan values and traditions that express the concept of relationship in relation to process theology. A comprehensive process for working with leaders was developed and implemented over a four-year time period.  A specific portion of the process was tested using a written questionnaire and verbal interviews, which were used to assess the way volunteers perceived their own spirituality and leadership before and after four weeks of meetings and interaction with the volunteers.  These informal meetings focused on providing space for intentionality in the spiritual life of the leader and encouraged the practice of spiritual exercises. The thesis of the project is that implementing a spiritual formation process of leadership development is a necessary shift in pedagogy for training local church volunteer youth leaders to most effectively lead ministries to youth and young adults with an emerging postmodern world view which values authentic spirituality over other qualities and skill sets of leadership.  Chapter 1 introduces the process and provides the methodology and parameters of the research project.  Chapter 2 gives an overview of the challenge of postmodernism to church leadership, the need for pedagogical change, and the historical context of spirituality and spiritual formation in both youth and leadership, as well as a theological foundation for leading such a change in a denomination.  Chapter 3 summarizes and interprets the general findings while Chapter 4 provides recommendations for further study. To be successful, preachers need to consider what makes for effective and helpful example stories, because stories can be a window to the core idea of a sermon.  However, many preachers have difficulty finding good example stories when they prepare sermons.  This project examines selected passages in Paul's writings from a homiletic perspective.  Paul's metaphors and analogies have some recommendable elements and provide standards for selecting example stories.  Paul's marriage and potter analogies in Romans and the planting and running metaphors in 1 Corinthians are excellent examples for contemporary preachers to follow.  Two Korean pastors who are very famous for their impressive and influential sermons also have distinctive example stories within their sermons. There are some commonalities and differences among them. This study focuses on the perspectives on women in the church context that devalue women as imperfect and inferior beings in relationship with others.  It addresses the problematic situation of gender relations in the Korean church context with a critical analysis, and shows how cultural and social norms concerning women are deeply embedded in the Korean church context.  It also reveals how the problematic situation has been reinforced by its association with, and acceptance of, fundamentalist theology.  This study draws on transformative learning theory as a way of fashioning a new educational model for Korean women in the church. Even though the educational theory of transformative education has been developed and applied in various educational contexts, it has rarely been discussed in a faith-based context.  This project shows how it is possible to utilize transformative education theory in a faith-based context, through a case study with a class at a Bible institute.  This study also draws upon narrative pedagogy as a practical principle to create a religious educational model for Korean women in the church context.  Theological discussion centered on Minjung theology particularly, with the notion of shin-myung, is important in order to contextualize the narrative framework in the Korean context.  As a powerful tool for promoting perspective transformations in the church, reading the sacred story, the Bible, is discussed with feminist and post-colonial perspectives. Integrating these theoretical discussions, the religious education model for Korean women is grounded on the group experiences with Korean women in two different settings, church and school.  This model can initiate perspective transformation, not only in the women themselves but also in others. Because stories and storytelling are integral parts of our psychology, narrative theology offers a particularly powerful way of illustrating and teaching important Christian doctrine.  It is important to note that stories should never be summarized or reduced to a 'core meaning' when used for teaching or pastoral care and counseling, as this runs the risk of allowing the storyteller's own views and prejudices to overpower the deeper meaning of the story itself.  For this reason, all narrative theology should be based on the unabridged, unadulterated story in its purest form. Theologies of the cross, by emphasizing the suffering and death of Jesus, run the risk of condoning abusive behavior and portray Jesus Christ as a figure who intentionally seeks suffering and death as part of the act of redemption, minimizing the responsibility of the repressive society that demanded his death.  By emphasizing obedience to the Lord, these theologies can serve to maintain an oppressive status quo at the cost of innocent life.  The project argues that a more healthy theology can be formulated based on the psychoanalytical theory of individuation, as formulated by Carl G. Jung.  Bu using the example of 'The Story of Shim Cheong,' the dissertation shows how traditional, life-affirming tales can be distorted to serve the ends of a repressive patriarchal society.  Sacrifice is not something we can demand a person to offer solely for the benefit of others. A true sacrifice can only come from someone who has reached the goal of individuation.  It must be motivated by love and always serves to strengthen and enrich the giver. This project attempts to shift that emphasis by drawing on indigenous Hawaiian spirituality, Buddhism, and Christianity to construct a worship experience that is both spiritually and culturally relevant to the local people of Hawai'i. Process-relational theology serves as the foundation or basis under-girding the worship experience. The methodology used combines Participatory Action Research (PAR) method and praxis-reflection. Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. But this change is possible only when we intentionally seek to understand ourselves as racial and cultural beings and to increase cross-cultural competency through educational and training
