Traditional didactic classroom instruction is not always sufficient, because it does not provide an opportunity for elders to apply what they have learned. To compensate for this lack of experiential learning, role-play was incorporated into elder training in a particular congregation, resulting in the conclusion that role-play is a useful training tool in certain situations. This study focuses upon the elders' 'personal faith, knowledge of the doctrine, government, and discipline contained in the Constitution of the Church; and the duties of the office' (G-14.0205). Presbyterians hold the office of elder on an equal basis with the office of minister of Word and Sacrament.  Based upon this equality, this training course reflects the concept of 'team ministry.'  An underlying premise for the course is that a church can only be strong as its leadership.  An examination is conducted of the biblical principles of leadership in both the Old and New Testaments. An exploration is undertaken of the ways in which the Presbyterian system of government embodies the principles of team ministry. Studies of the ways in which adults mature in faith are presented and analyzed.  The result of the research is a five-week training course for newly elected elders.  The course is applicable to any Presbyterian Church (USA) of any size at any stage of development."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127669667004416,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:47:35.966Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":5,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Douglas B Resler","hits":1,"label":"Douglas B Resler"},{"value":"Peggy C Owens","hits":1,"label":"Peggy C Owens"},{"value":"Ruth M Hempel","hits":1,"label":"Ruth M Hempel"},{"value":"Steven P Eason","hits":1,"label":"Steven P Eason"},{"value":"Toby E Mueller","hits":1,"label":"Toby E Mueller"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Clergy--Performance standards","hits":1,"label":"Clergy--Performance standards"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Elders (Church officers)","hits":5,"label":"Elders (Church officers)"},{"value":"Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","hits":3,"label":"Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity"},{"value":"Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","hits":2,"label":"Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)"},{"value":"Christian education of adults","hits":1,"label":"Christian education of adults"},{"value":"Christianity and culture","hits":1,"label":"Christianity and culture"},{"value":"Church officers","hits":1,"label":"Church officers"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":5,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":5,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":5,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2010","hits":2,"label":"2010"},{"value":"2011","hits":2,"label":"2011"},{"value":"1993","hits":1,"label":"1993"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":5,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":5,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":5,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":5,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":5,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
