This project explores the questions of why and how religious convictions prompt violence, how perpetrators think and how religious beliefs can be used to inhibit, counteract or overcome religious violence. Critical theories of Rene Girard and R. Scott Appleby on violence and the sacred are engaged, along with indicators of religious corruption, resulting in approaches to assess religious actions and steps toward peace."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127840584892416,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:50:18.966Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:43:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0627c1a1-995d-4f68-862f-ef92e3aa7c08","accessControl_ssim":["2aa6fa54-b92f-4c36-b55b-97d26729ec8f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["HIV dis-ease: diagnosing the theological and religious barriers to HIV prevention and care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:18:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["945fb452-9147-4432-8b07-fa447d580043"],"hasLease_ssim":["763cb582-7230-4a3a-9a5c-9da4f29fa27c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marcia Y Riggs"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["G Guy Pujol"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Health","AIDS (Disease)","HIV (Viruses)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Theological assumptions and institutional religion have proven to be barriers to HIV prevention and care. This project defines the theological and religious barriers to HIV prevention and care and describes the personal and sociomoral impact these barriers impose on the public health system and public policy as well as persons living with HIV disease. An examination of 'modern' Western culture and 'post-modernity' follows the work of Lesslie Newbigin and the Gospel and Culture Networks.
