It reviews the conditions of and reasons for these clergywomen’s spiritual crisis in today’s church and society. As a history project, it provides close readings of two women mystics: Showings by Julian of Norwich and Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila. These writers’ teachings emerged from their ministries to people who suffered during plagues, wars, colonialism, and unstable leadership. The aim of this project is to present a new paradigm of engagement that will help the United Methodist Church live into its proclamations of inclusivity and Christian love. John Wesley was a source of support and dialogue with the women whose work as lay preachers helped his religious movement successfully spread throughout Europe.  However, this history is concealed from the modern church that continues to inhibit the progress of women.  The history exists, but has not been made readily available to educate the church.  There is a delicate impasse between modern women and the Methodist hierarchy. After first examining traditional assumptions of authority, the project turns to feminist theologians who offer a different paradigm. The research focuses on six clergywomen serving as pastors/heads of staff in large membership congregations in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and considers how they, as women, embody and exercise authority using a model of partnership rather than the hierarchical model to which the church has been accustomed.
