Spiritual neglect leads to increased stress and burnout.  This project focuses on ethnically and ecumenically diverse women in Greeneville, TN who report overwhelming personal chaos.  Through examination of daily journals and weekly meeting, the spiritual discipline of lectio divina (praying the scriptures) is examined in how it impacts the participants' relationship with God and how praying the scriptures enhances their ability to cope. Consequently many women experience long periods of spiritual darkness.  Through individual entrance and exit interviews of seven women from Highland Park Presbyterian Church, small group interaction with them around creative rearticulation of women's stories from scripture and individual Ignatian style meditation exercises, research discloses that all the women experienced sexual abuse, forced isolation and economic dependence.  Most had also experienced physical and verbal abuse.
