This research project proposes a way of understanding the needs of immigrants, especially those who are first-generation Hispanic. A theology of pastoral care as described in the experience of the Israelites in Exodus and in their exile experience in Babylon is used as a departure point and reference for a caring response to the needs of immigrants. Personal histories are included to give voice to the multiple and complex challenges facing immigrants. Because this ministry depends on both laity and clergy participation, a model proposed by Daniel Benedict is used with current members of a local congregation in order to experience the shape and feel of such a ministry. A general overview of the history of sacramental liturgical theology is followed by an invitation to return to early ecclesial liturgical practices. The author's own experiences with pick-up soccer games and as part of this community served as the primary background.  Sociological and theological resources regarding play were evaluated, with particular interest in how the 'unwritten' rules of a play community help to structure that community. Participants wrote journals weekly and reflected together on their experiences.  With cultural interest in keeping sabbath growing, the author learned that the church should not replicate the Jewish sabbath, nor should it carelessly adapt it. Participants experienced decrease in hypertension, body mass index and lowered blood glucose levels. The findings showed that persons who get involved in some lifestyle behavioral change can experience positive change.
