Such division is contrary to biblical teaching and reflects the need for church leadership committed to unity and skilled in conflict resolution. In this study, members of the Northumberland Presbytery Council were engaged in Bible study on Paul's call to unity and then introduced to conflict resolution theory. Informed by surveys submitted by council members, the author explores how Northumberland Presbytery pursues unity in the midst of its diversity and conflict. I surveyed and had focus groups with these churches. I wanted to understand why these churches are successfully reaching unchurched Brazilians, Americans, and Hispanics for Christ. Their evangelistic approach has caused, in my opinion, a reversal in the lack of congregational growth within the American context. I believe the reason why they are effective is because they are intentional in their goal of reaching others for Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128485113102336,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:00:33.586Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:29:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:14:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c4cc0166-44ec-48ef-9aa6-e9a6c2a8b542","accessControl_ssim":["9103b065-f7a5-44c4-873b-367df88a9bf6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Collaborative preaching: a young adult homiletic of hospitality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:29:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:47:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a63ac946-aa1c-496a-bdb6-837f4e526718"],"hasLease_ssim":["a028cc72-28f5-4775-9c1f-6ecdc46ae28f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rodger Nishioka"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas F Rice"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Preaching, Reformed","Church work with young adults"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores how a collaborative model of sermon preparation and feedback connects the pulpit to the issues of young adults at First Presbyterian Church. The general feeling is that many marriages fail, because people get married without understanding the impact this relationship will have on their lives. The Church has a vital role to play in helping to raise he awareness of what marriage entails. It has a unique opportunity to prepare couples for married life. The theology of marriage is explored and the role of the Church to help make healthy marriages. Responses from questionnaires and interviews were used to examine the necessity of premarital counseling. The author focuses on showing the necessity of premarital counseling and why the Church must consider it a tremendous theological teaching moment to help people prepare for Christian marriage. This project follows the path of a proactive assignment. It takes a quantitative and a qualitative case study approach process. This path is followed to achieve a relevant research methodology in order to enable the work to be of relevance to the ministry of the researcher. The author found that even though premarital counseling, can by no means be regarded as the sole factor to guarantee successful marriage, that there is a general agreement that there is need for helpful preparation of couples. Regardless of the outcome of the marriage, He feels it to be of eminent importance for the church to journey with people to their marriages. In that way all couples are made aware of the challenges that come with marriage. Pastors and other counselors must make use of all teaching opportunities available to them to make people aware of theological issues involved in the different aspects of life. This is why the author suggests structured policies on premarital counseling for his Church, which is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Suriname (Evangelisch Lutherse Kerk in Suriname) so that there is uniformity in guiding all members, and all Christians who will read this project. The author finds journeying with couples to their marriages indeed to be a wonderful teaching opportunity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127639888494592,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:47:07.566Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":571,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":8,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"D.Min.
