Through questionnaires and interviews, eleven NCD pastors articulated their convictions. Survey instruments used biblical foundations, historic distinguishing characteristics of the church, and climates and methodologies incorporated by these pastors. Koinonia, the unique sense of community generated within faith communities, was deemed absolutely vital.  Also very important were leitorgia (worship), kerygma (proclamation), and didache (teaching). Resources have been explored from cultural, ecclesiastical, theological, and spiritual perspectives in order to arrive at the needs of a congregation and how its corporate soul must be nurtured. Intentional reflection is crucial to this spiritual growth and change. This project uses an action research method to develop, implement, and evaluate a plan for intentional reflection before, during, and after a short-term mission trip in order to encourage spiritual growth for the participants. Results for the project included an empowered community where faith is enacted in intentional and missional forms by the congregation. Consequently many women experience long periods of spiritual darkness.  Through individual entrance and exit interviews of seven women from Highland Park Presbyterian Church, small group interaction with them around creative rearticulation of women's stories from scripture and individual Ignatian style meditation exercises, research discloses that all the women experienced sexual abuse, forced isolation and economic dependence.  Most had also experienced physical and verbal abuse. For three months the author selected an adult church school class to serve as a focus group and conducted interviews with the members.
