This study defines and discusses individualism at the family meal table and the 'Lord's Table.'  I then discuss these findings in the light of the Gospels, First Corinthians 11, and John Calvin's writings to gain theological/historical perspective.  Finally, I argue that individualism severely weakens our experience of the Lord's Table and the Church's witness. Selected members of the author's congregation were studies, using both questionnaires and personal interviews, in order to discern their attitudes and the sources of those feelings.  Findings indicate that most of these persons do not share some of the negative attitudes reported in the literature. A premise of this consideration is that such a discovery and appropriation will be most helpfully regarded as a specific case of the process of contextualization. This project focuses on the challenges of pastoral responsibilities and family life, using the writer's personal experiences, discussions with other pastors and literature review, thus following the descriptive methodology.  The research revealed that because of the need to fulfill what is expected of them, pastors find less time for their family and personal development.  It further found that spouses and children feel neglected and abandoned for church work and therefore, need more of the pastor's presence in the home. As chaplains develop pastoral relationships with their 'congregants' with Alzheimer's disease, they need an understanding of how they can provide spiritual and pastoral care to those who have lost not only their capacity to remember but are also losing their precious memories. This project assumes that the mission of the church is to witness God's love to people in ways that are appropriate to their stage and condition of life.  The research for this study uses the grounded theory method of research.  Sixty students on campuses near Charlotte, North Carolina were interviewed.  Conclusions from the research include specific suggestions for people who minister to students during the college years.
