Ministers as well as laity may well wait for an individual to approach them with a grief-related situation before they give thought to what will be said or done in order to help the bereaved. In that 'on the spot' form of ministry, the minister does not present his/her best pastoral side and the care-receiver may walk away feeling as though their needs have not been addressed adequately. This dissertation is designed as a practical resource to assist both clergy and laity in the development of an intentional grief ministry within their respective congregational settings. It takes two forms: that of evaluation of the particular church's current ministry to those experiencing grief as well as instruction in the establishment of an intentional grief ministry. Emphasis is placed on the care provider's ability to develop a meaningful relationship with the care receiver."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128611308175360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:33.985Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:15:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:06:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"952347bd-0cb8-42cf-9269-73dd3df1a493","accessControl_ssim":["b321c4ae-5271-4594-adf1-a0e37cc507bb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral care to the organ transplant recipient"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:15:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:29:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["059736d9-4683-42da-8254-decc414272a7"],"hasLease_ssim":["a7e35156-8f66-42d0-9937-19f08efc191a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Brian H Childs"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kenneth L Broman-Fulks"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with organ transplant recipients"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Receiving a vital organ from another human body is a powerful experience on emotional and spiritual levels, as well as on the physical level. As this procedure becomes more and more common, an increasing number of pastors will be ministering to one or more parishioners who are facing the transplantation experience. In this project, a theology of the value of human life and health is presented, along with a theological approach to pastoral care in situations where there is no cure, only continuing treatment of a chronic situation, such as the drawn-out process of transplantation and its resulting permanent life changes. The experience of receiving a new vital organ is explained from the beginning of pre-transplant phase, through the transplant, and post-transplant phases. Physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the process are explored and suggestions are given as to how best to minister in each stage of the process. The result is a booklet for ministers which they may use to aid them in better understanding and ministering to their congregants who are living with the help of an organ from another person's body."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128876220416000,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:06:46.625Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:14:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:46:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1877a7fe-4d04-4502-896c-cff170911b61","accessControl_ssim":["486bd06b-81d2-4baf-a5ef-a080c7229fbd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Understanding salvation today: contemporary reformed options"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:14:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:50:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["88f1c297-5fc9-4237-b200-440a7b26707e"],"hasLease_ssim":["e75785eb-9b75-48fe-9e5e-84d27b24dbae"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George W Stroup"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ernest T Thompson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Salvation","Theology, Reformed"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The doctrine of salvation is central to the faith and the life of the church. There is, however, confusion in the church today about the meaning of salvation. One traditional approach to understanding salvation, substitutionary atonement, has been questioned by many contemporary theologians. In this project an eight-week class on understanding salvation today will be designed and taught. The project focuses on the work of five modern Reformed theologians: Gustav Aulen, John Stott, Karl Barth, Jürgen Moltmann, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Paul Fiddes. The approach to understanding salvation taken by each is described and consideration is given to the contribution each can make to a contemporary understanding of salvation. Scripture passages and a background essay for each of the eight lessons are given. This class was taught to a group of adults at the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the fall of 1994."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127617304264704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:46:46.029Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:12:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:44:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0c780a16-8f01-467b-b64a-6f15bd109a69","accessControl_ssim":["8a9e1a8a-e319-44ed-9ff8-56b837c0ba70"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The relationship of theology and play with special emphasis on the contributions of Glenn Bannerman"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:12:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:28:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["21b0dc4f-2df0-494d-922a-891ae6c7cbfc"],"hasLease_ssim":["d304640c-b9e5-4d54-9771-3ef6c0abb570"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ronald H Cram"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James G Hughes"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bannerman, Glen","Play"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The 1970s saw a proliferation of writing on the subject of theology and play. Since that time, there has been little or no thought given to the subject. This project seeks to explore the relationship between theology and play while addressing the question: Why does the church seem so reluctant to play? An overview of play theology is presented including the thought of Huizinga, Moltmann, Keen, Berryman, and Johnston. A discussion of psychological play theory is included considering the work of Freud, Piaget, Sutton-Smith, and Winnicott. This overview shows both common points of understanding as well as important distinctions in play theory. A new perspective of play is offered that focuses on the idea of God as the initiator of play as an act of grace and on human play as an appropriate response to that grace. This new perspective presupposes a theology of love and freedom rather than fear and control. The many contributions of Glenn Bannerman are examined. As a practitioner rather than theorist, Bannerman embodies the new perspective of play in his methods and actions. Children of diverse ages are provided both a new forum for active participation and a time for worship. The results are used to prepare a four-session retreat to enable church leaders to lead the congregation through the suggested changes in worship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128694668918784,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:03:53.484Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:49:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:54:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"492008e4-17aa-4e70-a3e9-4d48f4e2738c","accessControl_ssim":["06502f0e-d024-4368-973d-d5829f18cb13"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The role of Black theology in developing political education in African American congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T03:49:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:16:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fda29346-7af8-422d-acd2-0142f6359359"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae48aec2-45cc-4666-83df-30fafc7dcefe"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gayraud S Wilmore","Oscar Hussel"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dale L Shaw"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","King, Martin Luther, Jr, 1929-1968","Powell, Adam Clayton, 1908-1972","African American clergy","Christianity and politics","Flake, Floyd H","Political science"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The methodology of this research first examines biographical data of three noted political, civic ministerial leaders: the Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Jr; the Rev Dr Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr; and the Rev Congressman Floyd H Flake. Pastoral counseling was presented in the language of the conservative, Pentecostal church with an examination of the history of pastoral counseling movement, the Church of God, and a display of biblical counseling as it reflects upon psychology and the verbal inspiration of the biblical text. A close look at the conservative vs liberal theological conflict of the pastoral counseling movement is examined. It is research designed with a practical workshop that explains the pastoral counseling movement to the local church with information on developing a local church counseling center and the step-by-step process involved. The research shows that pastoral counseling and the Church of God are compatible and that the Bible is a usable resource for counseling theory and method."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129743841558528,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:34.053Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":571,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"Dissertation","hits":8,"label":"Dissertation"},{"value":"D.Min.
