The author focused on a particular congregation and ways in which small Bible study groups affected the cultural understanding of members.  She examined the complexities of culture and the significance of building relationships.  She worked with Paul Kimmel's definition of cultural understanding to examine the growth in understanding of persons utilizing a method called 'African Bible study.' The research identified, described, and held in conversation three influential contexts of 'bamboo, borders, and bricks' for Lao theology, and applied these contexts to create Christian responses to poor housing through biblical and folk stories, re-worked housing rituals, and community organizing with artistic poetry, songs, and visuals. The demise of Christendom and the effects on one local congregation for its ministry will be described, as well as the emergence of the missional paradigm. This research project proposes the possibility that an experience of the community surrounding a particular church can serve to knit the congregation together with the missio Dei. This project examines interfaith pilgrimage as such a model of interfaith relationship building. Mission-minded, global Christians? Information for this research was gathered from students at Atlanta Christian College who participated on short-term mission trips. They were surveyed to determine how the trips influenced them. The research demonstrates that students who had already considered career missionary service found additional encouragement to pursue mission ministry.
