With the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Bermuda half its former size, and the United Church of Canada struggling with shrinking resources, both question the value of union.  This project proposes changes which address past wounds and will enable the relationship to fulfill its original ecumenical mission of proclaiming Christ's ministry of reconciliation.  The project examines the history of the fifteen-year conflict, as experienced by persons involved, in light of ecumenical literature. The research was made through personal interviews, personal meetings, leader's retreats, and new immigrant training; I was able to learn from immigrant members, immigrant leaders, governing body personnel, sessions and pastors of Anglo churches. Four areas were identified in this project that affect the life and mission of the church to become racially/ethnically inclusive: Cultural Challenges, Legal Challenges, Financial Challenges, and Theological Challenges. This project is an interpretive case-study that examines that experience, and explores how the leadership of this pilgrimage facilitated spiritual growth. The 'lived metaphor' of pilgrimage gives people courage to live through the liminal ambiguity of transitions in their own lives. The relationship of complicated mourning and alcoholism is explored.  The 'thick description' of Geertz, the 'method of correlation' of Tillich, and the 'intercultural spirituality' of Lartey are used to examine three case studies; concepts from Bowlby, Rando, Masterson, Hammer and Hammer, and Brown; and theological perspectives from the Bible. This project focuses upon identifying foundational traits of effective leaders so that readers will have guidance for the nurture and selection of congregational leaders for mid-size congregations. Utilizing ecclesiastical and secular literature related to leadership and a qualitative study of effective leaders in a particular congregation, the findings of this project result in a description of critical leadership traits that enable an atmosphere for Christian ministry. A study is conducted of children and their leadership in worship employing the roles of children from the early church. Although the congregation decided not to reinstitute the office of deacon at this time, significant learning and growth in perspective occurred concerning the nature of change in small congregations.
