The focus of attention will be on the Church of God which is the oldest, continuing Pentecostal denomination in the United States.  The premise of this thesis is that a theology of pastoral counseling is found within the Wesleyan tradition by which the Holiness and Pentecostal movements were shaped. It suggests that the MBTI is not a highly regarded instrument psychometrically.  Further that much of the methodology currently employed is largely based upon influence and impression.  Lastly, the Jungian personality theory and method may not be the most desirable theoretical base for correlational studies.  My alternative seeks to observe and quantify purported relationships.  It employs a personality theory based upon factor analysis and the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire (16PF) as a preferred psychometric instrument.  This dissertation is largely a response to earlier work done by Michael and Norrisey.  It is a critique of Jungian typology and the MBTI. The blend consists of theological issues from a pastoral counseling perspective and Irvin Yalom's theory of group therapy from a secular stance.  Academic research draws from works by some of the founders of pastoral counseling in this country and from Yalom's book on group therapy.  Clinical research focuses on the experience of the members in the group the writer co-leads.  A model for pastoral group therapy is proposed and evaluated by persons from the fields of ministry and secular therapy. The collective feedback data of the trainers, a clergy peer observer, and the author based on his observation of video tapes of the sessions were used to evaluate the program's validity in increasing church members' self-confidence, pastoral identity, and competence as providers of pastoral care.
