However, people are still hungry for God’s Word. This paper is a case study of the renewal and revitalization of Hope Lutheran Church, drawing on my own thirty years of experience in the ministry. All of my congregations experienced growth during my time serving as pastor, and this dissertation is a description of my strategies for renewal. In this, the most important aspect is the pastor’s own personal walk. In order to meet the demands of ministry, a pastor must have prayer time and a devotional life outside of pastoral study time.\r\n\r\nFrom there, there are four main areas to address for a church looking to revitalize. The first is to heal. A pastor looking to renew his congregation needs to ask his congregants what the church is doing right and where the church has room to grow. He needs to listen to the hurt people carry in their own spiritual lives, and from there he must provide sound guidance from God’s Word while directing people to the sacraments.\r\n\r\nSecondly, the pastor must establish a confessional program of Biblical education for youth and old alike. Next, the pastor must ask, “Who used to be coming? And who needs to be coming?” Reach out to the inactive members and unchurched members of the community. Finally, the growing church must serve together. Most communities have people lacking basic necessities such as food and housing. Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Keller, William L., II"],"subject_tesim":["Lutheran Church--Government","Church renewal"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["On November 22, 2015 after several months of study and an onsite visit, the Minnesota South District through Dr. Phillip Johnson presented Concordia Lutheran Church with the Transforming Congregations Prescriptions (Appendix A). Two of the prescriptions focused on aspects of governance. Ten months later, I accepted the Divine Call to Concordia Lutheran Church. The leadership informed me that my priority was to implement the Transforming Congregations Prescriptions. The scope of my study is limited to Concordia Lutheran Church. I will focus on the implementation of the prescriptions that dealt with vision, mission, and the governance at Concordia Lutheran Church. In the following sections, I will describe the problem, purpose, and process of this research.\r\nThe problem that is addressed is to revise the governance structure so that the congregation can fulfill its mission and understand the key issues in the Office of the Ministry that support the process. This project will not provide a new plan for congregational renewal. The purpose of this study is to provide lessons learned from Concordia Lutheran Church to other leaders who are working to renew declining congregations. It also seeks to provide insights from studying the Office of the Ministry that affect pastoral leadership. The process used to reach this goal is to implement, with the participation of the congregation, a new vision, mission, and governance model, develop lessons learned, and review the doctrine of the Office of the Ministry to understand the implications for pastoral leaders as well as congregations. The experiment will be evaluated by determining if the goals of Transforming Congregations Prescriptions were met. I will identify lessons learned through three semi-structured interviews with key participants in the process and by developing a philosophy of ministry statement. A youth-oriented culture views the growing, aging population as a burden not a blessing; that as the number of older adults grows, so will the problems associated with aging (chapter 1). In the context of the church community, the younger adults viewed an aging church population as the decline of a source of gifts and abilities, and a drain upon church resources as older adults' need for ministry increases. The specific Scripture for the basis and focus of this project is Psalm 92, vs 12-14. This Scripture text suggests that older adults, 'planted in the house of the Lord,' in the church, still can bear fruit in old age and have much to offer in the way of resources for the life and mission of the church. This project sought to challenge the myths and misconceptions that suggest older adults are a burden and present a barrier to church renewal (chapter 3). A preliminary questionnaire revealed that those most active in the church and generous with their temporal and spiritual gifts are the older adults. The Scriptures reveal that God does not discriminate on the basis of age when persons are called to use their gifts for the building up and renewal of the faith community (chapter 4), nor does one retire from their Christian vocation until they are called to God's eternal home. Thirty-seven mainline Christians, from various denominations, participated in this project.
