Therefore, this study was designed to explore how pastors make application in such sermons. The study used a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with four pastors from the Reformed/Presbyterian tradition who were very dedicated to preaching Christ and making good application. Making application from Old Testament narratives is more of an art than science. Despite the ambiguity, 'responsible freedom' enables pastors to avoid moralistic sermons and giving sermons that do not have application."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130646353018880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:34:54.755Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:44:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:08Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"cbe7c485-33a8-4c78-b9aa-b8dc4fa8962a","accessControl_ssim":["0f5f0adb-30b8-4fa2-9cf1-db370e416edc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An unconscious hermeneutic: the laity experience of inerrancy when reading difficult scriptural texts"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:44:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:59:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9a94b34c-ac02-4a9e-8018-629867130a1a"],"hasLease_ssim":["58a84023-d080-46e3-bf0e-59fbc07992cc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David W Chapman"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian education of adults","Bible","Inspiration","Bible--Study"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of the study was to explore how lay people who hold to the doctrine of inerrancy engage hermeneutical strategies in reading Bible texts considered difficult. The research, following a literature review, engaged qualitative methodology through personal interviews guided by four research questions. These questions explored the participants' beliefs about inerrancy, their approaches to difficult texts, their methods of interpretation which were largely individualistic, and their reliance upon God's guidance in understanding texts. The conclusion was that the participants read in light of a vigorous personal commitment to God without further academic engagement with the formal doctrine of inerrancy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131481700040704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:48:11.404Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:50:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5e7bc05b-db32-42e1-8edd-e91b51fb414d","accessControl_ssim":["044b5f7e-3b79-4637-b98a-88aadcfc839d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A critique and evaluation of women serving in the role of pastor in the Southern Baptist Convention with emphasis upon the NT scriptures"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:50:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:54:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7066c877-2cf9-4156-96fc-3381420f05e8"],"hasLease_ssim":["bcde6543-3137-4709-96b9-c8f4b5618e93"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patrick J Campbell"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Women in the Southern Baptist Convention","Bible--Study"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this paper is that male and female equally bear the image of God but have different role functions designed by God in the creation order.
