The author compared and contrasted the effectiveness of inductive, narrative and deductive, didactic preaching upon listener retention in a Chinese church. The author preached four Old Testament sermons and four New Testament sermons in his church. The participants received a quiz to be completed immediately following each sermon. The results indicated that there was little difference between Old and New Testament sermons on participants' memory retention. Based on research in Psalms scholarship, poetics, speech, homiletics, and theology, the project devises preaching strategies appropriate to the genre in order to prepare, present, and evaluate response to five propositional and five genre-sensitive sermons.
