This ethnographic study of five, White lay leaders in a rural United Methodist Church uses the relational tools of community organizing to invite them into authentic self-critical reflection, and this study observes the impact on the lay leaders and the congregation. The Day-Long Lay Leadership Retreat was expected to train the United Methodist Church Book of Discipline mandated Administrative Committees. The project involves working with curriculum action research embedded within one-day ministry discernment events for laity. Measurement tools include a spiritual gift inventory, repeated measures Likert questionnaires, a short-term photovoice exercise, and semi-structured interviews. The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire.  Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control).  The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples.  It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits.  There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator.
