The ministry in general and the ministry of preaching, pastoring and teaching. It offers the understanding of a true and divine call of God versus that of man himself. It investigates and suggests the ways in which God calls an individual and the ways in which God calls all believers, collectively. It also points out that when the term 'call to ministry' is brought up or spoken about in the African American church it is usually taken to mean one is called directly to the ministry of preaching or the ministry of pastoring. Using the scripture, this project looks at the ways in which God called His prophets to show that God should always be involved in any type of call to the ministry. In these modern days we find it very easy to slip away from the divine call of God and allow the world, the church or human beings to do the calling themselves. Within this paper we look at the characteristics of a call as well as at when a call perhaps is not a call. This thesis project seeks to manifest four broad results: 1. To give a clearer understanding of the different segments of God's call; 2. To show that the church of Jesus Christ will be enhanced with this better understanding of a true calling; 3. To show that those who have the true calling of God will accept without hesitation; and 4. To provide a reference for our seminaries and churches to help train those who are called."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130159731965952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:10.677Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:02:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:10:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f37b08db-5836-44e3-bb1a-004fc8142f96","accessControl_ssim":["da8506a7-0fca-414c-bd1e-a1fed675653c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nurturing diaspora ministry and mission in and through a Euro-American congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:02:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:04:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8bc0289c-fe7f-4ed7-863a-9ccae845259d"],"hasLease_ssim":["bed54792-0fe9-4b56-a19a-529da48c2b24"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas Hall"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gregg W Detwiler"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Mission of the church","Social Christian ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is a systemic study on an often-overlooked strategy of God in accomplishing His redemptive work on the earth--Diaspora ministry and mission. The overall framework of this project is reflected in what Eldin Villafañe refers to as 'the hermeneutical circle of social ethics.' This paradigm involves three steps, which have each been undertaken from a systemic point of view. The three steps ask three basic questions: Clarification--What is going on? Conceptualization--What does the Bible and other pertinent disciplines say? Confrontation --How do we respond? The first step involves doing careful social analysis to gain a contextual and comprehensive picture on the issue (Introduction and Chapter One). The second step involves biblical and theological reflection; what Douglas Hall calls 'doing systemic theology.' This step also involves doing systems reflection and consulting other pertinent sources (Chapters Two-Four). The third step involves developing clear strategies--consistent with a systems view of reality--that flow out of a confluence of the first two steps (Chapter Five). A primary premise of this work is that Euro-American churches have largely 'missed' the dynamic vitality of Diaspora ministry and mission due to deficient 'mental models.' These deficient mental models, it is argued, arise form some specific sociological and theological oversights that are often present in Euro-American church systems. The primary aim of this study is to see these deficient mental models informed and transformed in a way consistent with Albert Nolan's passionate statement about the role of Christian social analysis--'to clear away the lies, the blindness, the confusion and propaganda, so that faith can discern the movement of the Spirit.'"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132919084875776,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:11:02.200Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:01:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:47:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7cb37e08-4889-4dd4-bb23-2c5ec61a35b9","accessControl_ssim":["6b4e4d42-26d4-4db9-8526-8ba3e8ece22b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Influences of a laity/clergy dichotomy on the ministry of the urban church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:01:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:48:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fa420044-65a7-4b69-b71c-8b3e7a547cc3"],"hasLease_ssim":["6c776a91-a4da-47c7-8811-2a35a0629d65"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas Hall"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Annette Payne Wright"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Organizational learning","Senge, Peter M","Clergy","Laity","Bible. A primary premise of the work is that the systemic nature of the dichotomy is expressed in most aspects of Christianity, decreasing the potential of individual Christians to effectively live the Christian life and do the work of ministry that Christ has left for his church. A historical analysis traces the origin of the dichotomy and how the dichotomy has been codified by church structures, constitutions, and traditions. The Pauline epistles are employed to illustrate the point that the whole church has been equipped by the Holy Spirit to know and to do the theology that is proclaimed in the scriptures. Peter Senge's idea of a Learning Organization is used as an applicable methodology for mending the dichotomy. Its more horizontal outline helps the church to sanction the laity as equal partners and fellow leaders in the ministry of the church and reduces the church's tendency to reproduce chronic multitudes of perpetual followers. A question the thesis poses is developed around the idea of whether the Christian church will allow a division that looks and oftentimes feels so much like the outlawed Jim Crow laws in this country to continue to thrive, or, whether the church will submit the horrific practice of the dichotomy to the oneness of the church inaugurated by the blood of Jesus Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131431343226880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:23.380Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:01:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"54d8735b-fcfb-4fac-bb9c-79f642bf40db","accessControl_ssim":["32615cd9-0d45-47d8-b698-b600722782cd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Making the connections: the pastoral role of mentored ministry in educating a multicultural society"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:01:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:37:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7c01bf7d-4641-405f-aa3b-4037d073142f"],"hasLease_ssim":["1eb94df1-159c-4784-a340-9973dd5960bc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas Hall"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sherlane A Washington"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Mentoring in church work","Clergy--Training of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The contents of this thesis project in the culmination of a number of issues that have come to forefront in realizing the need for analyzing the direction of Mentored Ministry for the year 2000 and beyond. First were the many social issues that arose during group discussions, especially from students newly transplanted to the Boston, New England, area from other countries and how these issues impacted their personal spirituality. Second was the difficulty of some of these ministerial students in relating American methodology reflected in the reading material, with the overall cultural attitudes of their congregants who had been raised in other nations. The research material, as well as the information provided from the methodology utilized through systems thinking seeks to inform those of us desiring to develop a more diverse understanding in pastoral care in an increasingly multicultural society. The various literature and causal loop diagrams assisted in examining the spiritual, social, and emotional data needed to strengthen Mentored Ministry students in their pastoral roles in church and within their community. The resulting information revealed a clear need for those attending the class sessions and Peer Theological Groups to recognize a broader scope required in pastoral care as ministers within their various church and para-church positions. The final student comments indicate the impact of specific reading material and lectures over the course of the fall and spring semesters of the years 2000-2001."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130907663400960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:03.960Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8124121f-9a0e-4a57-8c57-69cac9bf71a7","accessControl_ssim":["5c48cc4a-92eb-4cd3-93c6-f47901d35223"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A student manual and teaching supplement for the book Biblical preaching, by Dr. Haddon Robinson"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:56:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["45d68be6-3806-4ffb-ac02-6d5c130e086c"],"hasLease_ssim":["a19b3bdd-aca3-4bf9-b97d-4a84a2525a28"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sid Buzzell","Haddon W Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert A Permenter"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Robinson, Haddon W","Christian education--Teaching methods","Dick, Walter","Preaching--Study and teaching","Expository preaching","Carey, Lou"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis helps college level students apply the principles of the book Biblical Preaching, by Dr. Haddon Robinson. The primary premise of the work is that by nature we are all creative beings. If God is a creator God, and we are created in His image, then there is something in us that seeks to create, and see the works of our hands and say, 'it is good.' Therefore, a goal of leadership is to bring out creativity in people. The term creative expression is used in this work to describe the creative process evident in all disciplines. Organizational leadership in a postmodern world must inspire creative expression. Specific dynamics for effective organizational leadership will be examined. We introduce two ministry sites that will serve as our laboratory for the practical application and evaluation of this research. The thesis concludes with suggestions for returning the church to a more balanced and biblical foundation. By examining the cultural environment necessary to inspire to artist, it will be possible to develop the God-given creative expression in everyone. The practical outcome of this thesis will be an organizational leadership model for a postmodern world that inspires creative expression in people."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130964890484736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:58.536Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:11:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f776e5c8-6107-4ae7-9434-7869419bf261","accessControl_ssim":["6c5c4c81-a47c-424f-9afe-3b4c701edb2a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Being and becoming: demographic, religiosity, and attitudinal survey of New England Churches of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:12:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0c72ae66-9e35-4e3f-a37c-a694f526a946"],"hasLease_ssim":["d42868d5-1be4-487a-9c8f-0308e8aba16d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"location_tesim":["New England"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paul D Clark"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Methodology","Churches of Christ","Demography"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is a study focused on one religious tradition in New England. The American Restoration Movement, and its particular branch known as Churches of Christ (a cappell), has a rich and varied history in New England. Currently there are approximately 104 congregations totaling about 5749 members. Yet, due to the autonomy of these churches, accurate accounting is somewhat inhibited. What do these churches look like? Past research has focused solely on attendance figures and did not address other research possibilities such as demographic, religiosity and attitudinal aspects of the tradition. The thesis-project seeks to answer the question by gleaning data from a particular survey instrument that uses demographic, religiosity and attitudinal options. The thesis begins with an explanation of the genesis of the survey and the methodology used to collect the data. Two chapters, then, are devoted to analyzing demographic, religiosity and attitudinal data. With the assistance of the survey's data, a picture of what New England Churches of Christ look like at the start of this new millennium is developed. Demographic and religiosity data is shared in order to get behind the attendance figures and gain a more complete picture of this movement. Attitudinal data, which is based on certain characteristics, or indicators, of church 'health' is used to assess the vitality of the group. A third chapter, related to the survey, offers some perspective on various opportunities and challenges the tradition will face in the coming years. A final chapter puts flesh on this thesis. It is a presentation and summary of one church's recent strategic attempt, through the use of an instrument called a vision notebook, to assess their current situation and then seek to implement the ten health indicators into their local church in an intentional, healthy, and effective way. The goal of the thesis-project is to paint a picture of the tradition, offer some insights into her current state, and tender a few challenges. The premise of the work is that Churches of Christ must know who they are if they are to develop a fuller identity and be useful to their communities in the new millennium."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132979713540096,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:12:00.021Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"81b1b666-dcfc-491d-bb6f-9b51dfdd97ac","accessControl_ssim":["1c3c4109-8c70-4415-8a1f-d5b4057ee6fe"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Men, the family, and the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:57:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c5f17bb6-3b3f-4c08-baf3-67ee8ed57e49"],"hasLease_ssim":["8875f9c1-10bb-4e56-8097-19a66b78a5b3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jean B Lee"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Human development","Child rearing"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project proposed: 'the family makes a significant input in the development of wholesome males, and, where this input is negative, the Church plays a major role as a transforming and sustaining agent'.
