The study deals with the question of relevance as the foundational question of homiletics preceding the question of application or sermon's effectiveness. Biblical relevance, according to the thesis of this project, is rooted in the character of God's word rather than the changing preference of the listeners. A primary premise of the work is the assertion that the question of biblical relevance commences with the biblical text. Consequently, the clues that the essential  aspects of biblical relevance must be found within the biblical corpus. Analysis of the God's communication with people in the Bible yields two substantive conditions of relevance. The first condition of relevance is that the biblical content, expressing a biblical idea, asserts an imperative aimed at the volition calling it to a response in the context of our relationship with God. The second condition of relevance is that the biblical form, framing the idea, gives it coherence aimed at the human cognition with the goal of making the idea intelligible to the listener. These two conditions are both necessary and jointly sufficient conditions of biblical relevance in preaching. The thesis begins with the theological analysis of the dominant genres of the Old Testament and the New Testament seeking to extract the two necessary conditions of relevance. The theological study is followed by a historical/ philosophical  analysis of the changing views of biblical relevance in transition form Modernity to Postmodernity. Throughout the project the author uses illustrations from his experience working for renewal in the United Church of Christ and the Ashburnham Community Church where he serves as pastor. This tool will address numerous areas of leadership character and competencies; however, of particular concern is the training of leaders to think, learn, and function systematically, acknowledging the complexity of the church as a living organization as it functions in turbulent times.  All too often leaders merely emulate the leadership styles and techniques of the marketplace or corporate culture.  This project will make a careful study of a biblical theology of the church and of leadership and compare it with the growing data on systems theory and organizational learning theory.  This project will explore the use of systems theory as a means of understanding organizational design with the view to aiding leaders in their leadership function. A distinct analysis will be made of Peter Senge's model of systems thinking. Evangelism, church planting, and theological education are effectively transferring to Filipinos.  But spiritual formation and ministry skills need attention as second generation churches tend to stagnate.  Few missionaries minister to pastors after their formal training.  This research was done primarily through the case study of a local minister's fellowship which the author served as teacher and advisor for several years. It is written from the perspective of a local church pastor who addresses the struggle of making Christian maturity the goal of ministry.  It is based on the writings of the Apostle Paul, who considered the maturity of Christians the test of the quality of his ministry.  The primary question for a pastor is:  How will Christians develop toward spiritual maturity?  Four erroneous assumptions are addressed that can prevent growth to completion after conversion.  A spiritual theology of maturity is built on a study of Paul's use fo the term teleios.  Its etymology and usage are summarized to create a biblical theology of spiritual maturity.  Then it is interpreted through the lens of systems theory, which emphasizes the interrelationships and interactions in the processes of growth. A literature review adds a broader perspective of Pauline categories for growth and maturity in Christ.  Thus, a holistic view is offered which formulates the content and contexts necessary for development to maturity.  The thesis material is then reformatted in a manual that is useful for laypeople.  The series of lessons are formatted to provide an overview of Paul's view of maturity, while taking the persons through the processes of growth in Christ. The primary focus was on the role of the senior Pastor. The primary context was a seeker-oriented church, and was led by the pastoral staff more than by committee. It was concerned with he question of what leadership roles and actions would most likely lead to a successful capital campaign. A secondary question dealt with the theological implications related to fundraising in a local church. A primary premise of the work is that there is a strong correlation between the way the primary leader approaches a capital campaign and the effectiveness of that campaign. When the additional issues of a seeker-oriented philosophy are added to the mid, this correlation becomes even stronger. Strong leadership must be theologically driven. The thesis begins with a look at the important roles of the leader during a capital campaign and then explores the complications in a capital campaign for a church that is seeker-oriented. After a review of the literature, the thesis probes the theological issues related to fund-raising. the work includes a chapter defining and defending the case study methodology employed. The thesis then moves into a case study of the leadership of Ogden Church's capital campaign. The thesis concludes with a chapter that evaluates the case and gives suggestions for further study. Hundreds of teenagers were surveyed in an attempt to clarify the aspects of preaching that they find most effective. The research concludes that teenagers are extremely interested in the content and delivery of sermons, preached in the context of the communal worship service in the local church.
