Many Christians struggle with how to serve the Lord and use the resources of the Christian faith in their employment. They feel that what they do at their work is not nearly as important in God's eyes as what is done on Sunday mornings at church.  This project consists of eight modules that will be used to help Christian executives have a comprehensive theology of work and leadership. Although many of these principles can be used cross-culturally, I chose to research and write specifically in the African-American context because this is my cultural background. There is such a great need for ways, strategies, and ideas that will decrease the divorce rate in this community. The problem with a strict post-modern view is its inability to respond to the enormous amount of hurting family systems in dire need of healing. I strongly believe that marriages and families can improve greatly given the right tools and information. The most effective for clergy and counselors alike in this post-modern era is the model that combines psychological theories with biblical principles. With 1.2 billion people who belong to 4,693 ethnic groups and speak more than 400 languages it still is home to the largest number of unreached people groups in the world. The greatest need that the Indian church faces in the 21st century is for large numbers of dedicated and well-trained servant-leaders to serve the existing congregations and to reach the remaining unreached people groups and languages with the gospel. It is widely recognized that the prevalent dominant paradigm of training has many weaknesses that are adversely affecting the health of the church. This study looks at the ministries of a modality and sodality (Christian Evangelistic Assemblies and Bharat Susamachar Samiti/New Theological College) that have been closely working together with some success for more than two decades in northern India to learn principles that might help to alleviate these weaknesses. At first we briefly look at the history of the church and theological education in India. Then we look at the way the modality and sodality have worked together. They remain in use today. This thesis-project argues that the changing ecology of communication demands that Salvation Army preachers adapt to the current communications environment. The theology and praxis of revivalism remain malleable enough to serve the present age, and the grace reflected in the Army's social work outreach is easily understood, but a style of preaching stuck in Victorian rhetorical convention is ineffective. This thesis-project surveys the history of preaching within the Salvation Army and alternative ways to portray Scripture to listeners attuned to the electronic post-everything age. Research elicited feed forward and feed back survey responses from a congregation to whom a Salvation Army minister delivered sermons in modern style. A spiritual theology was developed based upon an interpretation of Matthew 5-7 through a theological framework of Christian spiritual formation.  A literature review demonstrates the uniqueness of Christian spirituality, specifically in prayer, within contemporary western culture.  Second, survey research was conducted to determine current formation realities.  The spiritual theology and survey data were synthesized to design a comprehensive pathway for congregational spiritual formation. At the same time there is concern that churches lack the spiritual heath necessary to fulfill God's mission. The challenge of a missional effectiveness that is rooted in spiritual integrity is the focus of this thesis-project. The areas of leadership, worship, discipleship, social service and evangelistic engagement are examined. Spiritual integrity occurs when churches are truly present to God. An overuse of power could lead to a negative, controlling environment where churches and people are harmed. An underuse of power could lead to a general malaise in the church: a lack of direction and passion for the Lord's work. This thesis-project was a leadership awareness study of the nature of power and authority in the role of pastoral leadership in which the biblical and theological perspectives on the issue of pastoral authority were explored. These lay leaders are required to go through a course of education prior to assuming their office. The exact nature of that training is not made explicit in the church's constitution, so it is left to each congregation to discern a program that will prepare their ruling elders for faithful service. This mandated moment is an opportunity for positive spiritual growth. But many of the approaches to this task have relied on a heavily didactic method that focuses on transferring information, rather than a devotional method which focuses on spiritual formation. What is offered here is entitled 'Prayerful preparation: Elder education as spiritual formation.' The author's objective in this project begins with identification of the two scopes of worship, traditional devotional-style worship, with its focus on spontaneous worship, and contemporary praise and worship, with its emphasis on a rehearsed worship. The content of this thesis project involves identifying the problem and its setting and presenting a theological framework, literature review, methodology of research, and outcome of the project.
