An analysis was done of the practice in Nebraska from 2000 to 2009. The knowledge and skill sets required by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church nationally were also analyzed. The current Nebraska practices and the national sets recommended were compared to best practice as seen in entry level seminary preaching courses. What might the preacher learn from paying close attention to his or her own past and current surroundings? What stories do locale, landscape, history, and even building structure of a congregation have to tell? Research gathered from three ELCA Lutheran congregations, interviews of parishioners, and insight gathered from books written by environmental psychologists and preachers informed the writing of this thesis. The author employed a phenomenological method of research to discuss the caring interactions between the preacher and the bereaved. It examined the human phenomenon of grief and loss and emphasized the intentionality of the funeral sermon and pastoral care to deal with the phenomenon of the death of a loved one.
