The author uses the West African oral traditions of storytelling as practiced by the West African griot to develop the images of pastor/griot and the preacher/griot.  Using these images and the Emmaus Road story found in Luke 24:13-35, the author develops the Emmaus Road model for pastoral care and the formation of the funeral sermon. Spiritually resilient people, however, use their God given strengths and faith resources to cope constructively with suffering.  This study proposes a four part homiletic method to enhance spiritual resilience focusing on the sermon's intention, desired response, flow/plot and congruence.  The method was tested by presenting a four-part sermon series to two groups. This project includes an historical and informational overview of abuse, with its Biblical and theological foundations.  A case study contains sample activities. Interviews, sermon analysis and questionnaires were used in seven different congregations at eight preaching events to assess listener response.  For the five preachers in this study, those whose views of the Bible more closely matched their listeners' views used less story, while those whose views vary more from their listeners' views used more story.
