The project design for the dissertation included nine steps: (1) Sending questionnaires to the seminary directors of field education belonging to the Association for Theological Field Education. This produced data about field education supervisors, training of supervisors, and determined specifically what films, if any, were presently available for this purpose. (2) Conducting research at the Library of Congress regarding the availability of films on pastoral supervision. (3) Surveying Association for Clinical Pastoral Education members for possible audio-visual resources. (4) Making visitation to seminaries where significant pastoral supervisor training programs were in effect. This also included the audio taping of those training programs. (5) Taking information from the author’s own training and experience, the questionnaires, the visits, and preparing a script for an orientation and training film. (6) Shooting and editing a color video film on pastoral supervisors. (7) Showing the film to a group of persons who were, or would be, pastoral supervisors. (8) Receiving and evaluating feedback from the persons viewing the film by means of a questionnaire testing instrument. Diakonia is a service ministry that has been in existence since the early church. Throughout history, deacons and deaconesses carried out the ministry of diakonia in both the church and secular arenas. While most of our congregations in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have different types of service ministries, most do not grasp the full understanding of diakonia. The role of the deacon in the church remains elusive to many congregations and many synods and bishops have not supported the deacons in the way pastors are supported. This project is an exploration of the total expression of the ministry of diakonia and the role of the professional deacon as it pertains to this important service ministry. The researcher utilized the ethnographic semi-structured research model to interview eight pastors at their respective churches within their urban ministry context. The basic need addressed herein is discontinuity in church operations which results from frequent personnel changes. Especially, churches which exist in a highly mobile and changing society are affected by a high rate of leadership turnover; and, therefore, require some method which facilitates easy transmission of essential information and speedy adjustment of leaders to their tasks. Otherwise, the frequent turnover of leadership may result in loss of essential information, waste of valuable time and energy, and misappropriation of resources…Described herein is a process by which a local church may develop an up-to-date operations manual. The document, produced through collaboration with local church leaders, provides a systemic method to transmit information and to acclimate leaders to responsibilities and tasks necessary for continuity in church operations. Group methods, research of existing policies and information, individual interviews of persons possessing special knowledge, and other such data-gathering methods as necessary to develop an up-to-date manual are described. Additionally, this project enlarges ownership of information concerning church operations by gathering such information into one document, which is presented for official adoption by the church. Since that time I have been personally involved on two occasions in the placement process of the United Church of Christ. After my initial entry, I have made one other move within my adopted denomination. The second placement was accomplished while this doctoral project was in progress. I perceive inadequacies in the placement process of the United Church of Christ, differing in nature from the deficiencies of the United Methodist process. No placement system devised by the mind of man can work perfectly. But my personal experience in two dissimilar systems aids in analyzing the merits of placement practices of the United Church of Christ. Two major studies of placement in the United Church of Christ have been conducted by the Research Center in Religion and Society, located at Lancaster Theological Seminary. The first study, “Placement and Deployment of Professionals in the United Church of Christ,” was conducted in 1973. The second study, “Pastoral Search Committees,” was conducted in 1975. These studies identify problems in the placement process in the United Church of Christ that match my own experience. This project is an attempt to deal with the problems identified in those earlier projects. The study on search committees suggests that probably the most serious omission committees make is in not adequately preparing for their tasks (e.g. preparing statements of needs and goals, conducting studies of the congregations, deciding the qualifications they want the minister to have, preparing a job description) before interviewing a candidate. This study suggests that committees seeking a pastor seem unaware of the professional qualifications that they want their pastor to have, or how to describe qualifications adequately.
