It was hypothesized that a change in orientation would occur in midlife, precipitated by a crisis and that change would occur in three stages: rule-following/conforming, rule-dismissing/questioning and value-realizing/integrating. Two studies were performed with 62 male ministers.  An attitude survey demonstrated no difference in the ethical orientation by age or denomination but self-reports of midlife crisis were significantly related to the questioning stage. It uses the Defining Issues Test designed by James Rest of the University of Minnesota as an instrument.  The research finds no persons operating at post-conventional stages and 95.5 percent at the conventional stages.  Average P score is 52.3.  The author believes that the results would be similar in most institutions.
