When utilized, feedback can also enrich preaching. Following the examination of the components and phases of the process of communication, this dissertation describes the nature and role of feedback in modifying sermon content and delivery, identifies the sources, bases, and forms of acquiring feedback to preaching, and tests and evaluates some methods for acquiring feedback from a small group within a congregational setting.  Included are the procedure followed in organizing the feedback group and the steps in the development and utilization of feedback forms. Eight parish ministers were trained to train lay persons in pastoral care ministry and in the theory and practice of pastoral supervision.  The ministers then received supervision of their supervision.  This dissertation presents descriptions of the practices of pastoral supervision by these seven ministers. The project is designed to help local congregations formulate their own programs, using the characteristics in respect to their individual members.  Specific programs are not a part of this study.  The list of characteristics was derived from readings about the two ages, reflections on personal experiences, and interviews with older and younger persons. The results indicate that a variety of factors contribute to the rejection of formerly-held beliefs; however, most often factors indicated poor judgment on the part of local church leadership. The study develops a theology and theory on marriage, traces the historical and literary formulation of premarital counseling as a practice, reports the results of a questionnaire survey of premarital counseling practices among clergy in the two Adventist conferences, and develops an alternative premarital counseling program which enables clergy to save time and enhance their premarriage counseling experiences.  The study of 100 clergy in two Adventist conferences investigated their programs, backgrounds, churches and materials characteristic of premarital counseling. Data from questionnaires returned by the clergy indicated: 1) 94.0 percent believe in premarital counseling; 2) only 18.0 percent felt comfortable doing premarital counseling; 3) the majority felt uncertain about the actual effectiveness of premarital counseling; 4) 84.0 percent require premarital counseling; but 5) 87.0 percent said they did not have a specific structured counseling program. Where the people as a whole and the pastor have shared significant mutual trust, such 'corporate' trust begins to weaken while the personal ties, or 'one to one' trust between the pastor and individual parishioners grows deeper.  What do these paradoxical-seeming changes mean?  nearly eighty such pastorates were studied to learn how the pastor can maintain strong corporate trust as well as the individual trust that results in good pastoral care.
