With the community seated around the table in a Presbyterian (USA) church, the congregation was studied for six-months using linked quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Architectural, historical and theological sources from the Reformed tradition inform the study. This research attempts to give new ways of searching for the presence of the Holy by exploring the intersection of theology, the faith stories of five congregations in the Presbytery of Arkansas, and the architecture of the building complexes of those congregations.  The research employed the method of qualitative analysis to find recurrent themes in the faith stories of the congregations as told by long-time members, analyzing those stories through the lens of Reformed theology, and contrasting those findings with the church's architectural expression of faith.  The study found that each congregation expresses its faith in unique ways, both in story form as well as structurally, but that Presbyterians need reinforcement of our verbal vocabulary to articulate how we understand the Holy to be among us as a particularly called people of God. This study explored how faith changes and develops at times of suffering and after, using Pargament's RCOPE and the author's questionnaire on faith behaviors.  Using McClure's roundtable pulpit method for an 8-week study, the author taught a lectionary-based class focused on making sense of suffering, and wove personal stories, scripture, and emerging theological themes to inform the preaching. The thesis suggests that if United Methodists, in particular, can understand the differing ways they hold the Bible as authoritative, they will be better able to respect others' beliefs, and be more likely to live visibly the unity about which they read in the Scriptures.  Research on sociology, education, and small group theory are shared. Categories of biblical interpretation based on how different persons hold the Bible as authoritative are presented. The author chose four case studies of pastors and churches in the Presbyterian Church USA who are the 'Joshua' following the 'Moses' of their churches. The long pastorates range from twenty-one to forty- five years. The churches are thriving in increases of worship attendance, membership, budget and staff. The institute was aimed at developing leadership potential and was designed to introduce participants to thirteen core competency areas considered important for successful church leadership.  Each program component, activity, and course was designed to strengthen the participants knowledge in one or more of these competency areas.
