By means of a survey among 1,800 clergy in Minnesota, it was found that many clergy came into ministry from an extreme family system. Based on characteristics and functions of biblical persons specifically designated as 'servants of the Lord', the servant-model ministry includes the following dimensions: political leadership, prophetic address, priestly mediation, and suffering with the afflicted.  Energetic leadership by the church through congregational pastors and elders in preventative and rehabilitative programs is implied. The study uses questionnaires and interviews to obtain information from patients in treatment on admission, at discharge and following discharge.  The expectation was that there would be a decrease in spiritual experience and religious practice prior to treatment and a decided increase following.  The questionnaires substantiated this expectation.
