The author drafted this policy on the basis of research in the theology of Sabbath rest, clergy burnout, adult learning styles, and missional ecclesiology. The author hypothesized that clergy and lay leaders in congregations can embrace ways of thinking about ministerial sabbaticals that are theologically grounded, missionally driven and sensitive to the context for ministry. The author tested and sustained this hypothesis by conducting interviews with twenty clergy and twenty lay leaders, all of whom had already reviewed a first draft of the sabbatical policy. The project is a result of years of research including interviews with other clergy in the American context regarding the task of disciple-making.
