The church is called to communicate God's love and acceptance through ministries of hospitality and welcoming, providing a church-home environment, information-sharing processes, and interpersonal relationship opportunities that will be perceived by strangers as inclusive, inviting, and sincere. Size is not the issue in this mission, although many congregations use size as an excuse. The setting is analyzed including population figures and trends.  The community and the congregation are described. Its mission in the neighborhood is to provide worship, education, witness, community service, and support. Research involves biblical resources, theological studies, and empirical knowledge of a specific small urban church situation.  A simple analysis of these avenues of concern demonstrates that the viability of the small urban church rests in the action of God with His people.
