Koinonia is defined as a consensual partnership between a church's membership and minister(s) in which the roles and expectations of each party for the other are explicitly understood.  The significant conclusions of this paper are that through a covenant process the reality of koinonia between laity and clergy as envisioned by the New Testament can be established and maintained in the local church today. People are seeking such a fellowship and when the covenant fellowship is not found in a particular congregation, seekers look elsewhere.  The ministry challenge addressed by this thesis is the intentional introduction and cultivation of interventions to develop characteristics which will move an aggregate congregation toward becoming a covenant fellowship, thus becoming more attractive to the seekers as well as more responsive to their needs.  The conclusions reached in this study are that it is possible to create those physical characteristics of a covenant fellowship within a congregation which make a difference in retaining active members. The project applies the concept of hospitality to the development of a specialized older adult ministry.  The study examines the characteristics and needs of older adults and notes the biases held by society against the elderly.  By using insights from social marketing theory, hospitality was expressed by carrying out need assessment, program design, implementation, and evaluation for an older adult ministry in a particular congregation.
