A pilot study involving church board members was designed.  A spiritual formation inventory was administered to gain the subjects self-perceptions of their spiritual formation needs.  Based upon the inventory results, a series of educational exercises was developed and taught to the board members. The board members indicated in their postinstruction responses increased desire and intention to pursue systematic spiritual development. The thesis was that people can be taught and trained how to pray and as a result experience growth in Christ.  The methodology focused first on the pastor: his study of prayer, practice of prayer, recruiting, teaching, and training prayer group leaders. He scripted prayer concerts and reflected on them.  He also gave inventories to the participants. The author assessed the level of faith maturity among members by means of a questionnaire adapted from Search Institute, held several goal setting and program planning meetings with a focus group of lay leaders, and presented several elective learning experiences over a twelve-month period.
