While not all Reserve/Guard chaplains pastor congregations, those who do are subject to special tensions.  The reserve chaplain faces both philosophical and functional role expectations that come from a variety of sources: the military, the civilian congregation served by the chaplain, the chaplain's endorsing agency, and the ever-present realization that if mobilized he or she would have to leave his/her civilian congregation to be with and minister to Reserve soldiers.  A research questionnaire was developed by the author to identify tensions resulting from the dual role ministry. The research discovered that although the level of training was minimal, chaplains have a strong sense of self-confidence that they could deliver combat ministry.
