The pastor needed help administering pastoral care throughout the congregation as he could not provide adequate care to the entire congregation alone. Thus, Sunday school teachers and leaders received training in selected pastoral care competencies to enhance the ministry of the church as it continued to grow.\r\n\r\nI began by researching the field of pastoral care to identify essential pastoral care competencies. The congregation provided input regarding which pastoral care competences were essential needs of Thompson Baptist Church. With the competencies determined, I, as the pastor and project director, designed a training curriculum to teach the essential competencies to the adult Sunday school teachers and leaders. The project director researched the fields of ministry coaching and, along with the assistance of a Coaching Strategy Team, created a lay leader to lay leader coaching strategy. The project director implemented four elements in the development of the strategy: (1) investigated leadership development among the laity of the First Baptist Church of Friendswood to create a leadership development profile; (2) examined leadership development coaching models to determine best practices; (3) developed a lay-leader coaching strategy for the First Baptist Church of Friendswood, Texas; (4) presented the strategy to the leaders of First Baptist Church of Friendswood, Texas, for adoption. The third project ministry goal was to equip the selected members to minister to persons grieving the death of a loved one. The tentative project methodology included lectures, PowerPoint presentations, videotapes, music, case-studies, role-plays, and hands-on activities. Recommendations to increase lay involvement were formulated in the final two sessions.  The project was evaluated by the experimental and descriptive survey methods.
