The strategy emerged from research that included interviews, extant literature, and observation of the Nation of Islam that uncovered those factors that contribute to black male aversion to church. The project concluded that the primary deterrent to black male church participation was the failure of the black church to develop and implement outreach strategies. A training plan was developed utilizing available leadership materials and existing research. The training included seven didactic sessions covering the subjects of team leadership, servant leadership, personal leadership, team communication, team conflict, team spirituality, and team purpose/function. Each individual completed a spiritual gift inventory and participated in a consensus building activity. The team went on a weekend retreat which included one of the didactic sessions, and six different ropes course challenges. The project followed the skills enhancement model. First, the project director researched five selected expositors' approaches to life application. Second, the project director prepared and delivered three expository sermons implementing the principles of life application discovered in the research. Finally, five professional peers evaluated the three project sermons along with three sermons randomly selected from the project director's prior year of preaching.
